Good news about HTC Universal : it works also with regular GSM SIM cards - no need to have special UMTS USIM card ! July 30, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
In some 3G phones, when you put in them a SIM for GSM, then you are getting such message:
... that indicates, that a phone requires special SIM card - especially designed for UMTS (European and Japanese standard for 3G ; in USA 3G is implemented with CDMA-EVDO technology) networks. Fortunately somebody has checked whether HTC Universal (that will be sold as Orange SPV M5000, T-Mobile MDA Pro, Vodafone VPA IV, etc) works also with regular GSM cards and the answer is positive: Basically all my 3G phones (from German carriers, not UK carriers who have a UMTS network only like "3") accept SIM card also. Also the Universal works well with a T-Mobile, VF and O2 SIM (please note that all T-Mobile SIM cards are UMTS enabled anyway, USIM isn't required, tech-wise to use 3G services). So yes, you can use the Universal with 2.5G SIMs also, even if you will not get the full UMTS benefit then. To learn more click here - you can find there also very extensive photo review of HTC Universal! Conclusion: while HTC Universal will be the first UMTS phone powered by Windows Mobile (although not first 3G phone powered by Windows Mobile - it is HTC Harrier for CDMA-EVDO networks) this fact should not discourage people to buy it - it will be not necessary to buy 3G/UMTS subscription to use this phone! This is good news and shows that users can move to 3G/UMTS gradually: first they can buy the phone and can use it with their old GSM SIM card and then, when time is ripe, they can buy 3G/UMTS subscription and can get USIM card ...
