2 new Microsoft smartphones announced : Qtek 8300 and Qtek 8310 - both with built-in Wi-Fi and Windows Mobile 5.0 ! August 15, 2005 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R. While i-mate is waiting for GITEX trade show (that will take place in September 2005) to announce new Windows Mobile phones made by HTC and distributed by them, Qtek has no such "major trade show to wait for" so Qtek has just released information about new Microsoft smartphones (to the left: Qtek 8310, to the right: Qtek 8300):
Some highglights about these phones:
Conclusion: while these 2 models appear firstly branded by Qtek, clearly we will see them also branded by i-mate and released by various mobile phone operators under their own brands - if operators will decide to do it. Presence of built-in Wi-Fi means that Skype client for MS Smartphone will be extended and usable also for voice - by now Skype client for Pocket PC had voice and for MS Smartphone not yet (still in Beta version). Windows Mobile powered PDA phones (Pocket PC) always were better than Symbian with regard to Wi-Fi - they had either built-in Wi-Fi or possibility to attach it through SDIO Wi-Fi card, but now also Windows Mobile powered smartphones (MS Smartphone) join the Wi-Fi party, what is incredibly important considering that now everybody has Wi-Fi at home and there are many Wi-Fi hot spots available everywhere. On the other hand many corporations still don't like Wi-Fi due to security risks, but since smartphones are targeting more mass market than bussines customers (that are more into Pocket PC phones, than smartphones), it should not be a problem. In the view of having built-in Wi-Fi, lack of support for UMTS is not critical, particularly as latest tests by mobile phone press proved, Wi-Fi is more important for end users than 3G (like UMTS). Particularly in Europe where there are no flat rate tariffs for 3G/UMTS and end users are scared to use 3G in order not to pay big ammounts of money for mobile Internet traffic, the built-in Wi-Fi (that is available for free in many plces) is much more important than UMTS/3G (that is very expensive in usage). Regarding lack of 3G video calling: many people simply don't like to have this feature in their mobiles phones, because with this feature it is impossible to hide your real physical location - for somebody who is calling you over 3G video call, so lack of video calling in these 2 new Windows Mobile smartphones may be an advantage!
