BenQ re-brands BenQ P50 to Siemens P50 August 23, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Putting new label on old, outdated, products, will not necessarily help them...
Chinese newspaper "Commercial Times" is reporting that Siemens wants to re-brand very old unsuccessful Pocket PC phone BenQ P50 to Siemens brand (BenQ has recently purchased Siemens Mobile business and thus has rights to use Siemens brand for 5 years) and start selling it under Siemens brand. While BenQ P50 is already on sale in Taiwan (home country of BenQ), it is still not available in Europe or USA. Clearly BenQ naively believes that putting "Siemens" label on an outdated model, will boost sales... BenQ P50 or rather Siemens P50 is a rather largish PDA phone:
... that is bigger than HTC Magician as you can see on picture above and thus bigger than upcoming mini Pocket PC phone from HTC with built-in QWERTY keyboard - HTC Wizard (HTC Wizard has exactly the same size as HTC Magician, but due to sideways slide-out keyboard it is only a bit thicker). While Siemens P50 has built-in Qwerty keyboard and built-in Wi-Fi, it is being shipped with outdated operating system (OS) - Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, instead of contemporary Windows Mobile 5.0 ... and BenQ's intention to start shipping this phone with this outdated OS in October to Europe and USA means total disrespect for customers: we recommend you not to buy it, unless BenQ will release Windows Mobile 5.0 ... and anyway: in October 2005 HTC will start shipping commercially first Windows Mobile phones powered by Windows Mobile 5.0, so in this context buying a phone with outdated OS without the possibility to upgrade, makes even less sense...
