Mio A701 - a GPS Pocket PC phone made by Mitac - unveiled August 25, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Apparently next week Mitac will officially unveil their first Pocket PC phone with built-in GPS: Mio A701. It will be the second Pocket PC phone on the market with built-in GPS but this time with much better specifications: 520 MHz processor, VGA display and contemporary version of operating - Windows Mobile 5.0! However still: no built-in Wi-Fi... Interestingly the first scoop for this GPS phone has been published by a British tabloid, that has been priding itself in being anti-Microsoft - The Register: the device is based on a 520MHz Intel XScale PXA270 processor backed by 192MB of memory, of which we reckon at least 64MB will be ROM. The phone runs Windows Mobile 5, aka 'Magneto'. Clearly this anti-Microsoft-ness of The Register is only a pose. In reality not only The Register was accepting advertisements of Microsoft products, but also is propagating Windows Mobile phones, as they are - superior to Symbian phones. Conclusion: Mitac's Pocket PC PDAs (not phones) with built-in GPS were big success and Mitac managed to sell many of them, sometimes under different brands (like for example "Medion")... pity that Mio A701 doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi, but still it will be a very interesting offering for fans of Windows Mobile phones - after all it has SDIO card slot, which can be used to attach SDIO Wi-Fi card...
