Review : T-Mobile MDA Pro
September 08, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
This review is in German so here are some highlights from it (our translation):
- T-Mobile MDA Pro (and HTC Universal in general) is the only Pocket PC phone that supports UMTS (a mainly European and Japanese standard for 3G telephony)
- strong points: fast processor of 520 MHz, VGA display (640x480 pixels) and 2 cameras
- when closed T-Mobile MDA Pro is very well protected against scratching... and thanks to LEDs on the side, it is possible to see if phone call is incoming or SMS received. It is also possible to receive phone calls when the phone is closed.
- the keyboard is in German layout - Qwertz (not Qwerty) but German characters are missing - one must press for example "A" + "SYM" to obtain letter "Ä".
- keyboard has light sensor what means that back-light of keyboard is activated only in darkness
- T-Mobile MDA Pro is very heavy - 280 gram and weighs 70 gram more than T-Mobile MDA III for example
- as first Pocket PC this phone features 2 speakers - i.e. stereo external sound! (without headset)
- in total only 43.72 MB of memory is available for end user so buying SD memory card is absolutely necessary (what should be not a problem because 1GB memory cards in SD format are very cheap nowadays)
- while author of the review has not tested video calling, he tested UMTS download speeds and concluded that he can get 160 kbps effectively (compared to 384 kbps that is theoretically possible in UMTS). It is still faster than GPRS and enough for Skype but clearly it is not as fast as CDMA-EVDO available in USA.
