For developers: A View of Windows Mobile 5.0 from 10,000 Feet September 22, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. Not many people know that Windows Mobile 5.0 and push e-mail in MS Exchange are not the only latest achievements of Microsoft in mobility. New major version of .NET Compact Framework - 2.0 - constitutes also one such important breakthrough... here comes a series of articles about software development specifically for Windows Mobile 5.0 ! A view from 10,000 feet? Right, but parachute is not included (nobody gurantees profit making sales, particularly due to big rip-off of Handango and [yet] tiny market share of Windows Mobile) ... so jump (into Windows Mobile 5.0 software development) at your own risk ! To provide developers with a platform for building mobile applications to meet these growing expectations, Microsoft has released Windows Mobile 5.0. The release was announced at the beginning of May during the U.S. Microsoft Mobile and Embedded DevCon. Windows Mobile 5.0-based devices should start becoming available for purchase in coming months. Combined with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and the .NET Compact Framework version 2.0, Windows Mobile 5.0 creates a tremendous opportunity for developers to push their applications further than ever before. We will be spending the next many months taking a detailed look at various features of Windows Mobile 5.0, Visual Studio 2005, and the .NET Compact Framework 2.0. To get our investigation started, this month's column provides an overview of Windows Mobile 5.0 and the tools available to get you started developing Windows Mobile 5.0–based applications today.
