Some highlights from the web chat about Orange SPV M5000 Pocket PC phone
September 26, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.
Orange SPV M5000 goes on sale soon, and as we reported recently a web chat about this phone with participation of 3 employees of Orange UK took place, so here are some highlights from this chat:
- Orange SPV M5000 Pocket PC phone will go on sale middle October
- it will not be available without SIM lock - only subscribers of Orange UK will be able to buy it
- there will be no M5000 "in black" as O2 is offering in form of O2 Xda Exec - only in silver
- there will be at least one ROM upgrade for M5000 - in life of M5000 (when it will be on sale) - complaints about too rare ROM upgrades by Orange were not answered
- Orange will release also ROM upgrade with push e-mail upgrade for M5000 some time in future (unknown when)
- Orange wants to stand out and differentiate from other carriers who offer also HTC Universal by 2 things: a) additional software bundled with the phone, b) quality of 3G coverage [please note: according to our information in UK still Vodafone has the biggest 3G coverage, but here Orange employee didn't say that their coverage will be bigger but of better quality]. Some of these programs added by Orange to M5000 will be: special home screen in style of Orange, Orange Mail, Orange Help, PacketVideo, etc. Business customers will have preinstalled another special package from Orange in their M5000: Office Freedom and Sales
- M5000 with UK keyboard layout will be released too (now it has [by mistake?] US layout - characters " and @ are other way around)
- M5000 is contract only, with SIM lock and not available on pre-paid tariffs (or without SIM card for that matter)
- spare battery is bundled with M5000 so user gets 2 batteries
- some new 3G tariffs will be announced by Orange around middle of October 2005 - together with commercial availability of Orange SPV M5000 Pocket PC phone at Orange UK
