iTunes for Windows Mobile is a scam
September 29, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

We are explaining in details how it has been done. We have been also talking (in German) with author of this scam.

Who is author of this scam? He is a 24 year old German. His name is Daniel Kirstenpfad. He lives in Germany.

First of all one should answer the question: why is he doing it? Why is he spreading this scam? Answer is simple: to boost web traffic of his websites. Warning: everybody who links to his websites with "schrankmonster" or "technology-ninja" in URL is already a victim of his scam. One shouldn't link to his websites because it feeds this scam further.

Why some other, even respectable, websites has fallen for this scam and are linking to this guy? Answer: because editors there are not developers and don't understand what it is going on on a deeper level. Because they didn't speak with author of this scam and didn't obtain some information that we got (we are not revealing everything in this news item).

How it has been done? This "iTunes for Windows Mobile" is not an application written by Apple or T-Mobile but is a mock-up application written with .NET Compact Framework 2.0 by Daniel Kirstenpfad himself. What does it mean : "mock-up"? It means that Apple has not written this application but it is a simple skeleton-like application that has some limited functionality and some hard coded behavior and looks. It may also play MP3 files but obviously it cannot play music purchased at iTunes because of course it doesn't support iTunes DRM. It is a simple mock-up. Since it is mock-up it means that not only screen shots but also video recording of this application in operation are not proving anything. This fake "iTunes for Windows Mobile" is not just a photo-shopped image displayed full screen in Pocket PC device, but it is a mock-up dynamic application, that however has nothing to do with real iTunes. You can think of it as "primitive MP3 player that pretends to look like iTunes".

Please note, that author of this scam is working on extending this mock-up application. It would allow him to show video recordings and do some more dynamic demonstrations. Of course all the time web traffic to his website would grow. Of course he will never release this application to experts who could decompile this application (it is written with .NET that easily can be decompiled) and immediately see that it is fake. He plans to release it only to such webmasters/editors who would promise not to give it to experts, and who obviously lack development skills and thus would not be able to unveil his scam!

While we would gladly see iTunes for Windows Mobile made by Apple Corporation and not some homegrown scam, we feel obliged to inform readers about the situation.
