Sirius satellite radio meets Windows Mobile : listen to Sirius in your Pocket PC ! October 24, 2005 [Pocket PC] | By Edward J. R. This story is for residents of USA only - subscribers of Sirius satellite radio - one of 2 major satellite radio systems in USA (the second one is XM Radio). Apart from satellite radio receiver, each Sirius subscriber gets also user name and password to access Sirius radio online (albeit in a limited scope)!
Not all Sirius channels are available online (all music channels are but only very few news and talk channels are), but those that are, you can listen now also inside of your Pocket PC! Read on! By now listening to Sirius radio over Internet was only possible inside of PC computer with special browser-based player:
... or with some 3rd party Sirius player programs for Windows XP, Mac OS or Linux. It was not possible to listen to Sirius in Windows Mobile because there are over 100 radio channels in Sirius and each requires authentication and passing of special token to the URL. The classic method to open an URL with radio live stream is not working. One needs front end that is accepting the user name and password and is building the proper dynamic URL that is then passed to Windows Media player. SiriuCE created by a user of Aximsite forums is such an application! SiriuCE is described here - and is also available there for download - as CAB and in source form (it's written in C# with .NET technologies) - if you would like to re-compile and extend it yourself (in fact we will be extending it and releasing a version for MS Smartphone too - soon). To make listening to Sirius radio more convenient for you, we have added the Sirius player for Pocket PC to our mobile page with live talk radio streams - especially designed for Windows Mobile devices. Below follow detailed instructions (with screen shots) how to listen to Sirius in your Pocket PC device. * * * * * At first ensure that your Pocket PC has Internet connection either through cellular network (GPRS, EDGE, CDMA EVDO, CDMA 1xRTT, UMTS, HSDPA or PHS) or through Wi-Fi or through Internet over ActiveSync connection (over USB cable). Once you have connection to Internet ensured in your Pocket PC, then open in your Pocket Internet Explorer the URL "mobile.msmobiles.com". Then tap on "Tools" and then tap on "Live talk radio streams" so that you should get a page that will look like this:
Alternatively you can enter the whole URL in full: http://mobile.msmobiles.com/radio.php. Once this URL is opened then scroll down to the bottom, to see a page like this:
Upon tapping on the "here" download link, you will see dialog like this:
Tap "yes" and the Sirius player for Pocket PC will be downloaded and installed, so it will be visible in "Programs" folder:
Now tap on "SiriuCE" icon in the "Programs" folder so that the SiriuCE will launch with empty fields:
Now you need to enter user name and password:
... and tap on "Init" button, that will fill the "Category" selection box. Upon selecting some category in the "Category" selection box, the "Genre" selection will be filled and then you can select some channel from the "Channel" selection box:
As soon as you tap on some channel in the "Channel" selection box, the Windows Media Player application will be launched and usually the first time you will see some error message:
... so try to select in the Sirius player for Pocket PC some Genre and Channel again and this time the audio streaming will launch:
Please note that after some time the audio streaming of Sirius channels over Internet is timing out and this problem is solved in Windows XP (standard) Sirius player in this way that you have to click on special are you still listening? page - otherwise the audio streaming stops. In case of listening to Sirius in Pocket PC: if your audio stream stops then just re-select the channel again and it will work. Conclusion: while unfortunately Sirius is not offering all channels online, these that are being offered can be listened in Windows Mobile for Pocket PC (soon also MS Smartphone)... and since in USA all operators are offering flat rate mobile Internet access, many people who have EVDO or EDGE or other wireless connection method available in their Pocket PC devices, now can also listen to Sirius radio in their devices! Since many people anyway have only one Sirius receiver that is installed in their cars, ability to listen to Sirius in Pocket PC makes even more possibilities because unlike regular PC or notebook, you can carry Pocket PC phone with you and listen to Sirius over Internet whenever wherever... Update 1 (credit: Undude): please note that Sirius not only is available only for USA residents, but also it is a commercial radio - one have to pay monthly subscription or one can purchase "eternal subscription" (pay once bigger amount of money and never pay again). However if you prefer completely free readio, then use the following link in your mobile device (pages especially designed for mobile devices): http://www.radioshowlinks.com/mdisplay.aspx Update 2: if you are a fan of Sirius satellite radio, we recommend you to use a very extensive SiriusBackstage.com forum. This is the biggest and the best forum and news site about Sirius.
