Lies, damned lies and Gizmondo : the failed gaming device lands in USA
October 26, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R.
Very small number of available games, lies and incompetence - this is what Gizmondo is about.
Yes, it is powered by Microsoft's Windows CE operating system (the same that is a core OS of Windows Mobile) but we are here not to pass marketing peptalk but to tell you how it is...
Yes, Gizmondo - the portable gaming console - has built-in GPS and is powered by powerful Windows CE, but let's look at some problems that it faces:
- incompetence of Gizmondo employees, example: on the Gizmondo website it is written "GPRS offers high-speed communication that follows your every move." but since when GPRS is high speed? EDGE can hardly be considered high-speed and to have true high speed one needs UMTS, CDMA EVDO or even HSDPA
- small number and low quality of available games: experts (Peter Rojas from Engadget) say that games for Gizmondo are pathetic, and totally not comparable to Sony PSP games.
- lack of mobile phone functionality (although it has GPRS support!)
- incompatible platform: Windows CE instead of Pocket PC - despite using standard 240x320 display
- very over-bloated advertising campaigns that contain many lies
- high price ($229 in USA): only slightly cheaper than Sony PSP, that (apart from GPS) is technologically superior
- Windows Media Player 9 only, lack of Windows Media Player 10 (that is required for streaming of some radio stations like for example Sirius satellite radio)
- lack of support for true high speed cellular networks like EDGE, UMTS, CDMA EVDO or HSDPA (high speed UMTS)
- lack of built-in Wi-Fi
Conclusion: Gizmondo already is (several hundred millions of losses) and will be an utter failure. Maybe next time Gizmondo should consult experts before constructing mobile console?
