T-Mobile at Systems 2005 trade show : review of T-Mobile MDA Vario + other stories October 27, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. Here we present a report from a T-Mobile stand at Systems 2005 trade show, that takes place this week in Munich, Bavaria (EU). It contains 20 photos. One of the hottest items at this trade show (apart from T-Mobile MDA Compact II, that was visible only behind the glass) was T-Mobile MDA Vario Pocket PC phone, which has chances to become super hit because it will be probably the cheapest HTC Wizard incarnation (459 Euro and less) and with which several people were playing at the stand (the guy in brown suit is holding T-Mobile MDA Vario in his hand):
... and which was available for everybody to play with (high resolution image here):
In this report we will talk about T-Mobile MDA Vario Pocket PC phone, T-Mobile MDA Pro Pocket PC phone and T-Mobile SDA Smartphone. Read on! * * * * * T-Mobile MDA Vario has slide out keyboard with 2 soft keys:
... and a display that is rotating automatically when keyboard is opened and closed:
Of course the typical "t-zones" icon is not missing, both in software and hardware:
... and seen from the side, the phone looks like a space ship from Star Trek:
The camera is not hidden under slide out keyboard but is exposed all the time and it is a 1.3 megapixel camera:
Good news is that contrary to T-Mobile MDA Compact II the T-Mobile MDA Vario has 2 soft keys also when the slide out keyboard is closed:
In the leaflet from T-Mobile:
... the release date for T-Mobile MDA Vario is written as "middle October 2005" but since this phone still is not available even on the website of T-Mobile Germany, it looks like there is some small delay. Here is the typical way how people use T-Mobile MDA Vario:
Apart from T-Mobile Vario the T-Mobile was showing also other phones, here you can see (from the left): T-Mobile MDA Pro, T-Mobile SDA II and HP iPAQ hw6515:
The T-Mobile MDA Pro was proudly presented as one of the biggest achievements behind the glass:
... and also on the stand for people to play with:
Some crazy people even tried to make phone calls with this brick (i.e. with the over-sized T-Mobile MDA Pro Pocket PC phone):
Of course MS Smartphone was not missing on the stand of T-Mobile and T-Mobile was showing the SDA II:
... that however, despite having brilliant QVGA (240x320) display, is totally uninteresting because it has Windows Mobile 2003 without upgrade to Windows Mobile 5.0 possibility. Don't buy it! The only interesting thing about this phone was pre-installed Opera Browser (see also "O" icon above):
While Sony Ericsson phones already have 2 megapixel cameras as standard, the T-Mobile SDA II has still 1.3 megapixel camera though:
... so if we consider that it has outdated operating system, there's really no reason to buy it. Contrary to the sad situation of MS Smartphones at T-Mobile, the situation with Pocket PC phones is brilliant and it looks like not only ultra cheap T-Mobile MDA Vario (HTC Wizard) will go on sale but also T-Mobile MDA Compact II will be available. T-Mobile is very often releasing Windows Mobile phones ahead of other operators and provides very often latest ROM upgrades, so considering that their phones are among the cheapest, it may be worth considering - as the source of your next Windows Mobile phone - even if you don't have T-Mobile phone subscription...
