SMS Kill Pill
November 11, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Not to be confused with "Kill Bill"!

Treo smartphones are not just mobile phones but they are a cult, where Treo aficionados (or should we say "fanatics"?) cannot imagine their lives without their beloved Treo. Buying Nokia or just any other phone is out of question for them. Since big part of these Treo aficionados will be buying soon the new Windows Mobile Treo devices, they will want to use the same applications that they used in Palm OS, also in Windows Mobile Treo phones. Many Palm OS developers therefore have no choice but to start porting their Palm OS applications to Windows Mobile.

While one could speculate mindlessly about it, here is one certain confirmation: Central for Treo, including SMS Kill Pill is being ported to Windows Mobile phones:

Since the Treo will be moving to a Microsoft Windows Mobile OS next year, James Fisher, Bluefish's founder, let me know that they'll be porting Central to support that operating system as well.

I'll be getting my copy of Central in a few days, I'll let you know how it works out. For about the cost of three StarBuck's Lattes Central is cheap insurance.

Although SMS Kill Pill sounds a bit like Kill Bill movie title, in fact it is a useful feature (one of many of Central for Treo):

SMS Kill Pill
  • Send an SMS containing your secret password to your Treo and all data will be erased and your Treo reset.
  • This is a crucial function for any Treo owner in the event your Treo is ever lost or stolen.
Conclusion: thousands of Palm OS developers are porting or will be porting soon their applications to Windows Mobile because they have no choice if they really want to keep their customers. For existing Windows Mobile developers it means: more, much more, competition is coming. For Windows Mobile users (particularly those who use Pocket PC phones) it means: number and quality of software will increase rapidly in next few months!
