TCMP player released in new version : 0.70 - but it disappoints very much
November 15, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R.

TCMP player is an audio and video player for Windows Mobile smartphone and Pocket PC. At first glance it looks as a valuable and free tool for playback of various audio and video formats.

Reality is different: AAC format support has been removed in the new version. So although this player supports enhanced podcasts (*.m4b files) and makes it possible to see various images for each chapter, it doesn't support audio format of enhanced podcasts so you can see changing images but you can't listen to audio! Yes, TCMP player brings you something truly new: silent podcasts!

Furthermore in reality TCMP player is not a freeware but...

... but it is a visitware: one can't get direct download link to the player but one must go through several pages, each with many advertisements and sometimes (!) downloads are not working at all!

Latest changes:

Version 0.70: 2005-10-15
+ Speex audio decoder support
+ mjpeg gray-scale support
+ minimal jpeg, tiff, png image file support
+ better support for enhanched podcasts (m4a with image slideshow)
+ coverart support for music files
+ ffmpeg library updated
+ support for low resolution decoding (video quality)
+ h263 elementary stream support
- AAC removed from official binaries because of intellectual property considerations
- Matroska codec info handling fix (h.264)
- MatroskaParser library updated to version 1.47
- ID3v2 fix in rawaudio
- OGG tags as UTF-8 coding
- some third party libraries replaced
- avi files with ogg vorbis stream fix
- h263 decoding fix + fallback to ffmpeg when format not supported
- s263 (with 3gp) fix and support for h263 extended width/height
- safe string handling (overflow protection)
- mpeg4 decoder fixes

Conclusion: this is not acceptable that the most usable file format support has been removed. Now this player doesn't deserve a download, because it doesn't bring anything essentially more than Windows Mobile Player that is built-in in every Windows Mobile device.
