Windows Mobile ( both Pocket PC and MS Smartphone ) catches up with Apple iPod - playback of enhanced podcasts possible November 16, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. Podcasting revolution is just getting started... Already several months ago Apple corporation has added native support for podcasting in iTunes software. However this support is not limited just to conformation to existing podcasting standards (RSS with enclosures) but Apple additionally introduced concept and technology of so called "enhanced podcasts". While regular MP3 file can have only one embedded image, the enhanced podcasts (that are stored in *.m4b files) can store unlimited number of images! Enhanced podcasts work in this way that the file with audio is divided into chapters and each such chapter can have different image. Number of applications of this technology is huge and it may include DIY guides (DIY = Do It Yourself), songs with lyrics for karaoke purposes, etc, etc. By now the only mobile devices able to play such enhanced podcasts were Apple iPod players. Now also any Windows Mobile phone can do it as we have tested it successfully:
How to enable enhanced podcasts in your Windows Mobile device? Here is how:
Please note also that many MP3 files have an image embedded in them. Yes, it is only one image (not several as in enhanced podcasts) but unfortunately since Microsoft has very low level of innovativeness the Windows Media Player for Windows Mobile can't show these images embedded in MP3 files - unless these files are synchronized through Windows Media Player for PC. This is very troublesome because usually people are copying the files through ActiveSync or downloading from Internet directly and it means that usually the images embedded in MP3 files are not visible if you play them with Windows Media player in Windows Mobile! To evade this problem you can use above mentioned TCMP player also for listening to MP3 files with album art (i.e. embedded graphics) - then you don't need some cumbersome synchronization procedures but just any MP3 file works (i.e. plays audio and shows album art) - no matter from where you have downloaded it:
Truly TCMP player is one of the best programs for Windows Mobile ever!
