(yet another) review of i-mate K-JAM Pocket PC phone November 18, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. USA-based The Gadgeteer by geeky Julie and charming Judie usually delivers very reliable reviews of gadgets. This time the i-mate K-JAM has been reviewed and since this phone is GSM quad-band and supports also EDGE, it is well suited for USA, where EDGE is very widespread. The device doesn’t show any slowdowns as the processor might suggest. Even though you only get a fraction of the 128MB ROM for your own use, the portion you do get is bigger than that on 64MB devices. I have loaded all of my applications into ROM, only having music and files on my 512Mb miniSD. WiFi and BT work very well, and the 802.11g radio does make a difference in the speed of file transfers over the network. The screen is excellent, and very bright. I wish it used SD cards, as I already had an SD card, but miniSD isn’t too expensive so it’s not really a problem. As you can see above, this review claims that i-mate K-JAM features fast Wi-Fi (802.11g) but unfortunately it doesn't provide any proof that indeed it is supported: for example setting Wi-Fi access point to 802.11g only mode and trying to connect... and providing screenshots of this trial. Although being a bit thicker than HTC Magician, the i-mate K-JAM (i-mate incarnation of HTC Wizard) is a very reliable construction and it is good to know that it is coming to mobile operators in USA soon - so that users can get it even cheaper than the i-mate K-JAM. For users, who however prefer SIM-lock free phone, the i-mate K-JAM may be an interesting proposition.
