HTC Wizard controversy : is it 802.11g compatible? November 19, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. The problem is that some incarnations of HTC Wizard indeed have fast Wi-Fi (802.11g, speeds up to 54 megabit/second) activated, and some have only the regular Wi-Fi (802.11b, speeds up to 11 megabit/second). What is going on? By now we can confirm that only i-mate K-JAM indeed has 802.11g Wi-Fi feature on board: it has been tested in this way that Wi-Fi access point was switched to "802.11g only" mode and i-mate K-JAM managed to connect to this access point and work properly. Unfortunately other HTC Wizard incarnations available by now - like T-Mobile MDA Vario, O2 Xda Mini S, etc - have only 802.11b Wi-Fi activated. The question is: assuming that all HTC Wizard incarnations have the same hardware, how to activate 802.11g if it is not active already!? Some registry tweak? Or maybe some cooked version of ROM upgrade? Well, for now one is for sure: if 802.11g is important to you (it's not about speed only, it is also about compatibility issues - even one 802.11b device can slow down whole 802.11g access point) then you should pay attention to which HTC Wizard you buy. As of now it is impossible to activate 802.11g in most of them...
