Dopod - the secret arm of HTC - expands in Asia region November 23, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. Dopod is not just a regular distributor as i-mate and Qtek are. It has indeed very special and close relationships with HTC. After a period of time when it was concentrating on China and Taiwan regions, now Dopod expands to more countries in Asia region: "The Dopod brand was first launched in China in 2002, and now there are 24 representative offices there," he said. In Asia, the company has already launched products in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. New markets in Dopod's sights are India, Australia, and New Zealand. In a related story mobile operator O2 Asia being angry at HTC's expansion through Dopod, decided to start selling next month O2 Xda Atom - the first Windows Mobile device that is operator branded but not made by HTC. This should be a signal from O2 to HTC, that it should hold their horses and not try to be everything to everybody: after all mobile operators have also mobile networks to operate and Dopod having close relationships with HTC (nature of this "close relationships" we will not reveal yet) can undercut O2 Asia! Well, whatever happens the situation among Windows Mobile phones in Asia is heating up, what is very good for the Windows Mobile platform as a whole. In Europe situation will cool down for a while after Verizon scored 6 month exclusivity both for Windows Mobile Treo and Motorola Q - first versions of these devices for GSM (and possibly UMTS) we will see therefore most probably in the middle of year 2006...
