Mobius 2005 USA ended
December 09, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R.
Here we summarize the Mobius 2005 USA event and we list all participants.
Some highlights from Mobius 2005 USA:
- Windows Mobile PHOTON confirmed - including plans to merge Pocket PC and Smartphone into one platform
- Office Mobile for MS Smartphone coming soon. If Microsoft wants to merge both platforms (smartphone and Pocket PC) so Microsoft must start porting both Office Mobile and MS Reader to smartphone (i.e. devices without touch screen).
- HTC Prophet Pocket PC phone was presented - it's on sale in Asia at Dopod Asia and thus it should soon come to USA and Europe too.
- previous rumors have been confirmed: Motorola Q is coming at first to some mobile operator in a CDMA EVDO version only. Only after big delay (probably 6 months) a version of Motorola Q for GSM and possibly UMTS/HSDPA will be available. Practically it means that there will be no Motorola Q outside of USA till the middle of year 2006.
- SlingPlayer for Windows Mobile was presented as early beta version with announcement that it will be available soon. In other words: you will be able to watch your TV at home, through Internet, on your Windows Mobile device - anywhere in the world.
- as usual the conference consisted of formal meetings - where presenters from Microsoft and from invited companies were presenting their stories, and of informal activities where participants could socialize and have big fun.
- attendees were able to give feedback to Microsoft as to what would be ideal Windows Mobile device - in a special exercise
- Mobius is an invite only conference, where Microsoft is paying for traveling (even intercontinental flights) and for hotel. However apart from that participants are getting freebies - free gifts. This year participants got the following freebies: i-mate SP5m (MS Smartphone with built-in Wi-Fi), Sling Box (a device to watch your TV at home through Internet), Motorola Razrwire (sunglasses with Bluetooth headset in them) and some other minor goodies.
- the caretaker of Mobius on the part of Microsoft is now John Starkweather (on the photo above). He was representing Microsoft as moderator of Mobius but of course participants were talking also to several other Microsoft employees.
The only objective measure of website popularity (in the sense: number of visitors) is Alexa.com service. Since this service is used even by blogging moguls like Jason Calacanis who sold WeblogsInc to AOL for several million USD, it can be considered as a good tool to compare popularity of websites. We use this tool in list below to find out really how influential participants of Mobius 2005 USA are. Please note: the lower the value of traffic rank, the bigger web traffic given site has.
List of participants of Mobius 2005 USA (sorted by web traffic of their websites - in parentheses):
- Peter Rojas, Engadget, traffic rank: 1,377
- Ryan Block, Engadget, traffic rank: 1,377
- Eric Lin, PhoneScoop, traffic rank: 3,310
- Howard Chui, Howard Forums, traffic rank: 3,430
- Michael Drecker, TreoCentral, traffic rank: 7,577
- Matt Miller, Geek.com, traffic rank: 9,822
- Joel Evans, Geek.com, traffic rank: 9,822
- Michael Oryl, Mobile Burn, traffic rank: 13,130

- Ed Hardy, Brighthand, traffic rank: 16,712
- Jason Dunn, Pocket PC Thoughts, traffic rank: 17,402
- Julie Strietelmeier, The Gadgeteer, traffic rank: 21,163
- Judie Hughes, The Gadgeteer, traffic rank: 21,163
- Lisa Gade, Mobile Tech Review, traffic rank: 22,189
- Paul O'Brien, MoDaCo, traffic rank: 25,059
- Paul Matt, ThreeGMobile.net, traffic rank: 47,683

- Nghia Nguyen Dai, PDAfrance, traffic rank: 115,134
- Clinton Fitch, ClintonFitch.com, traffic rank: 1,087,211
For comparisons sake traffic rank for msmobiles.com is 17,483 and we would be 12 out of 22 on the list if only we would be invited. However Microsoft is not inviting us due to tabloid nature of our site.
The fact that Microsoft invited also participants with super tiny traffic and influence (anything with traffic rank bigger than 50,000) - is simply pathetic and clearly the selection process of Mobius participants is flawed.
All in all Microsoft managed to invite also some super popular sites, including the
number one gadget website in the world (Engadget owned by WeblogsInc owned by AOL) - so in long term this Mobius event will have very positive effect on Windows Mobile.
