Stereo audio over Bluetooth (A2DP) available for HTC Magician NOW !
December 13, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

If you are an owner of HTC Magician Pocket PC phone, i.e. i-mate JAM, T-Mobile MDA Compact, Orange SPV M500, etc. - then we have good news for you: to enjoy stereo audio streaming over Bluetooth you don't need to buy new phone powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 (that will support stereo audio over Bluetooth since March 2006)! You can do it also in your good old HTC Magician:

In image above you can see audio streaming (from SD memory card) in stereo (!) over Bluetooth of the most popular podcast on planet Earth. Yes, we have tested it and it works reliably: stereo audio over Bluetooth with HTC Magician! Perfect quality. Strong stereo effects. Totally wire-free. Now you are free to exercise sports and listen to stereo audio without cables - all at the same time! Read on!

How it works? After installing Bluetooth extension mentioned below (it works on top of Microsoft Bluetooth stack, not as replacement of this stack) you need to do the following steps to get stereo audio working in your HTC Magician:

Firstly you need to search for Bluetooth devices with stereo audio support:

On image above you can see that Motorola HT820 stereo Bluetooth headset and Motorola DC800 stereo Bluetooth transmitter are listed (see links below to find more about these gadgets). The Motorola DC800 makes it possible to stream audio from your Windows Mobile phone to Motorola DC800 wirelessly, and later through cable between DC800 and amplifier - to your Hi-Fi equipment (and the other way around too: from Hi-Fi equipment to stereo Bluetooth headset)! Since Bluetooth stereo headset is more mobile and provides also possibility to make phone calls, we connect to the Motorola HT820:

As it is with all Bluetooth devices, before using them, you need to pair them. In other words: select the device and enter a passkey (which is "0000" in case of Motorola HT820) - as you can see on image above. After the proper passkey has been entered you can now assign your own name to the headset (the original headset name can't be changed but if you have more than one headset of the same model you can assign various names to distinguish them):

Of course you can use your Bluetooth headset for stereo audio as regular mobile phone headset for making phone calls:

After pairing don't forget to activate "Stream audio to headset" setting in the Bluetooth settings:

Now you can play stereo audio over Bluetooth ! To do it just tap "headset icon" in the title bar and select sub-icon for streaming (the green icon in the first image above).

To get stereo audio over Bluetooth extension for your HTC Magician Pocket PC phone, download CAB file from here (you can participate there also in discussion forum), open it with file explorer in your HTC Magician and after installation follow instructions as outlined above.

To maximize your stereo audio over Bluetooth pleasure we recommend the following products (tested with Windows Mobile 2003 and also Windows Mobile 5.0 !):
  • Motorola HT820 headset - to stream audio in stereo over Bluetooth from Windows Mobile device to headset
  • Motorola DC800 transmitter/receiver - to stream audio in stereo over Bluetooth from Windows Mobile device to your Hi-Fi equipment (amplifier, speakers, sub-woofer, etc). Please note: with this device you can also stream the other way around: from Hi-Fi equipment to your stereo Bluetooth headset.
  • USB Bluetooth dongle from Motorola with stereo audio support - it works also fine if your computer/notebook has built-in Bluetooth (just don't activate the built-in Bluetooth while you use it). Unfortunately Microsoft's native Bluetooth stack in Windows XP (also with Service Pack 2) doesn't support stereo audio over Bluetooth yet, so to use Bluetooth stereo headset you need special drivers...
