Preview : Windows Mobile phones at CES 2006 - main consumer electronics trade show in USA

Last year our reporter had visited CES and brought some stories about Windows Mobile phones and this year we will be also reporting from the CES...
The official name of the trade show is "2006 International Consumer Electronics Show" and it takes place in Las Vegas, January 5-8, 2006. While mobile phones are just tiny part of CES (unlike 3GSM, where they are the only topic), CES is clearly the biggest trade show in the world dedicated exclusively to consumer electronis (CeBIT is bigger but it covers also professional and enterprise areas). Here is preview of Windows Mobile topics that most likely will be covered at CES 2006:
- Microsoft will have stand and will be very strongly present. Bill Gates, who is de-facto boss of Microsoft (Steve Ballmer is CEO however), will hold keynote at CES 2006. Everybody at Microsoft's Windows Mobile related divisions is very excited about Palm Inc making Windows Mobile Treo, so certainly Treo 700w will be presented both by Microsoft and Palm at this year's CES.
- people from Windows Mobile community will be showing off Windows Mobile on Microsoft's stand: for example MVPs (like Jason Dunn) and external
contractors (like Dale Coffing)
- several hardware vendors will be presenting their new and old Windows Mobile phones, particularly:
- Palm will present Treo 700w Pocket PC phone that will be officially launched on January 5, 2006 - at CES 2006 ! Detailed specifications of Treo 700w will be revealed: although almost everything is already known, some last time surprises can't be excluded.
- Motorola will present Motorola Q (MS Smartphone). Most probably only a version for CDMA EVDO will be on show and more details about the mobile operator deal may be disclosed then. Unfortunately a GSM or UMTS version of Motorola Q - similarly like Windows Mobile Treo - will be delayed so these vesions probably will not be on show at CES 2006.
- Cingular (mobile operator in USA) is launching HSDPA network (HSDPA = fast UMTS) in USA and around March 2006 also in Europe operators are launching HSDPA, so several mobile phone manufacturers will be showing off phones with HSDPA. Some of them may be powered by Windows Mobile.
- Asian mobile phone vendors like Samsung, ETEN, LG, Pantech, etc ... will be presenting Windows Mobile phones, however some of these phones will be only presented but not offered outside Asia, but some of them will be available through local American and European distributors soon or immediately. Visiting CES can help people to decide which phone to buy - by having ability to touch and play with various units.
- generally Windows Mobile phones will be just one of many aspects of CES 2006 and by no means a mainstream or most popular topic. Probably high definition DVD and TV, together with gaming (Xbox 360) will be the hottest and most popular topics at CES 2006!
