More incompetence from Microsoft: Windows Marketplace
December 31, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Apparently Microsoft doesn't think that Handango.com or PocketGear.com/Smartphone.net are the best places to search for Windows Mobile software and information...

... so Microsoft has teamed up with some partners like CNET to offer downloads of software, that Microsoft denotes in many cases as "Free" but that in reality either a limited demo or trial version.

Microsoft touts:

Free Games, E-books, and Tools for Pocket PC
Download programs for your Pocket PC at Windows Marketplace.

... but reality is different: Microsoft redirects "Download" link - without agreement of developers - to web site of CNET where trial versions or freeware is being offered for download. In other words: CNET is getting money through advertisements on their website and thanks to Microsoft's wrong redirection: instead of using websites of individual developers, Microsoft redirects to website of CNET with downloads. In this way Microsoft strips small developers of advertising that they have on their websites.

Conclusion: clearly Microsoft's claims that it cares about ISVs (independent software vendors) very much - are a lie. Microsoft cares more for partnerships with big players like CNET instead of understanding what Windows Mobile developers really expect...

Please note: we recommend to use Fairdeal shop with Windows Mobile software that offers possibility to pay by PayPal and that gives 80% of money to developers (compared to 50% at Handango and 60% at PocketGear.com/Smarpthone.net). Unfortunately developers can't give this money back to users through Fairdeal - by selling software cheaper - because Handango enforces nasty principle, that "if you want to sell software at Handango, you can't sell it elsewhere for a lower price"...
