The last story in year 2005: Windows Mobile phones win in 4 out of 8 categories in a mobile phone competition December 31, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R. Here comes our last news item in year 2005! It is not entirely positive but it contains several (4) positive accents: Windows Mobile phones have won, according to renowned British mobile phone magazine "Total Mobile", in a competition named "Awards 2006, Best Phones Ever!", in 4 categories out of 10 (but in 2 categories Windows Mobile was not competing so it is more like 4 out of 8).
Read on! Interestingly: categories in which Windows Mobile has NOT WON are very well pointing out weaknesses of Windows Mobile phones! Nowadays all Windows Mobile phones have built-in cameras of very poor quality - not even remotely comparable to cameras with autofocus in some phones from Sony Ericsson and Nokia - actually number of megapixels is not the most important factor in establishing quality of camera... so no wonder that Windows Mobile has not won in "Best cameraphone" caregory (the winner is here: Sharp 903) .... On the other hand only one Windows Mobile phone supports 3G (i.e. UMTS) - the HTC Universal but it is too big to be appealing also for regular phone users and thus couldn't win in the "Best 3G mobile" category (the winner is here: Nokia N70). Clearly Samsung i300 has no UMTS so it couldn't win in category "Best music mobile" (where Sony Ericsson W900i won). To make a mobile phone perfect for music playback one needs also fast network support to download music and podcasts. With GPRS only Samsung i300 such downloads are practically impossible. Since Motorola Q is not out yet, clearly Windows Mobile phones couldn't win in "Best style phone" category (the winner is here: Nokia 8800). Obviously Windows Mobile was not competing in category "Best Network" and "Best Java game" but it may be worth mentioning that most Windows Mobile phones nowadays have a Java virtual machine on board and that most operators (in UK: 4 out of 5) already offer Windows Mobile phones... And now the good news come! Namely Samsung i300 powered by MS Smartphone has won in category "Best GSM mobile:
... and HTC Universal (known in UK as T-Mobile MDA Pro and O2 Xda Exec and Orange SPV M5000) has won in category "Best smartphone":
... that until recently was the only category where Windows Mobile phones were competing but these days all phones are competing in each other and distinction between smartphones and regular phones is getting less important. Samsung i300 smartphone won also in "Best innovation" category:
... and on top of that CoPilot Live 6 program with maps for navigation ("sat nav" as Brits call it) has won in category "Best accessory". This program is available only for Windows Mobile so it is a victory also for Windows Mobile camp. By the way: to learn more about Total Mobile magazine, click here. The current issue (i.e. 139) contains above mentioned "Awards 2006, Best Phones Ever!" results - together with detailed explanations and listing of runner-ups (i.e. competitors, that were considered) in each category. Total Mobile is now on sale at several newsagents in UK (although still several WH Smith points don't carry it). All in all everything is crystal clear what are the weak sides of Windows Mobile - mainly lack of 3G and poor quality cameras - so now manufacturers can concentrate on resolving these problems... Anyway: year 2006 will be a true breakthrough year for Windows Mobile and if only both A2DP and push e-mail will arrive as planned, Windows Mobile will go from strength to strength... msmobiles.com - passionate about Windows Mobile phones!
