Samsungs pumps up the hard disk and releases Samsung i300x smartphone with 4 GB
January 15, 2006 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

Another cool smartphone from Samsung, this time with bigger hard disk:

Samsung writes:

Maximum temptation

First-class specifications make the Samsung i300x an extraordinary mobile phone. With a huge 4 GB hard drive, the i300x knows no limits. Save your work, your music and your memories and if you run out of space, you can capture the rest of your life on the hard drive. Use the Windows Mobile interface and make working on the move easy. Read your documents and PDFs with the document viewer and transfer them all to your PC wirelessly with Bluetooth® wireless technology. You can also download data onto your computer via USB or IrDA. The i300x is a truly professional entertainment phone.

Everything you need

The Samsung i300x opens up a fast, new world of mobile communication. With intelligent functions such as the e-mail client, document viewer, Web browser, multi-format music player, 1.3 megapixel camera and ActiveSync, you always have your office to hand, your music in your pocket, and your photos straight in the album. Whats more, the 262,144-colour TFT (QVGA) display makes working easier and shows your pictures and movies in the best light. The i300x has everything you need.

Simply breathtaking

Pump up the music and lose yourself in the groove. Feel the rhythm and enter the next dimension. With the i300xs multi-format music player, you will experience impressive 3D stereo sound to rival live concerts, and with over 1,000 songs, you will have over 50 hours of non-stop music at your fingertips. With the integrated jog dial navigation, its quick and easy to switch between tracks. The i300x and music together, they're guaranteed to make life better.

To learn more click here. Specifications of Samsung i300x are here but nowhere there is explicit mention of Windows Mobile 5.0, so we cannot say for sure that this phone will have contemporary Windows Mobile version, but it is unlikely that it will not have it. Some highlights about Samsung i300x:
  • hardware wise the same construction as Samsung i300 but with bigger hard disk: 4 GB instead of 3 GB
  • QVGA display
  • stereo sound through built-in speakers
  • 3D surround sound
  • stereo sound through Bluetooth stereo profile (it is explicitly mentioned but it is not said whether it is Samsung's own implementation as it was in Samsung i300 or whether it is Microsoft's implmenetaiton from the AKU 2.0 of Windows Mobile 5.0)
  • 1.3 megapixel camera with LED flash
  • tri-band GSM (missing band: GSM 850) with GPRS class 10
  • MicroSD card slot
  • the super fantastic "wheel dial navigation"
Conclusion: if Samsung i300x really has Windows Mobile 5.0 (no official info about it yet) then this new smartphone from Samsung is a very welcome extension. However the main competitor of this phone - the Nokia N91 - apart from 4 GB hard disk has also UMTS and Wi-Fi, so still Samsung could have problems to compete with it. The minimum that Samsung i300 series need to get is Wi-Fi - without Wi-Fi (and thus ability to download big amounts of music/podcasts to hard disk of the phone - without PC) still Nokia N91 will be ahead - in minds of consumers.
