Fast Wi-Fi (802.11g) now available in all HTC Wizard Pocket PC phones ! January 22, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. HTC Wizard has been sold by i-mate as i-mate K-JAM - with 802.11g activated - but mobile operators like T-Mobile, Orange, etc were selling it as T-Mobile MDA Vario, Orange SPV M2000, etc but with fast Wi-Fi deactivated - i.e. having only 802.11b - the regular speed Wi-Fi. Now also owners of other HTC Wizard phones can enjoy 802.11g - with a simple hack: I just found out a way how to activate WLAN G Mode for a Wizard. I tested it with my German T-Mobile MDA Vario. I wrote a little program that both activates WLAN G and does some performance tweaks that truly speed up work with the Wizard. It also enables the keyboard cap notifier. To learn more click here - you can download CAB file that changes registry settings in your HTC Wizard, or you can just change registry settings manually: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMask=1 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8 Please note: you must reset your phone after making the changes in the registry. Credit: ZoSo. * * * * * Why 802.11g is needed at all? Isn't 802.11b fast enough? The fact of the matter is that 802.11g brings faster transfer speeds - 54 megabit/second - compared to 11 megabit/second in 802.11b! However having 802.11g is not only about faster transfer speeds but also about having access to some access points that are 802.11g-only - without 802.11g support, access to these access points is totally blocked!
