Unveiled: situation with ROM upgrades for E-TEN M600 Pocket PC phone
January 26, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

When it comes to Windows Mobile phones, both MS Smartphone and Pocket PC phone versions, they are very often judged by the frequency and availability of ROM upgrades. All the time Microsoft is delivering new versions and features, but these features are not trickling down form Microsoft to end users with equal speed or reliability. Unfortunately manufacturers and operators still do not realize how immensely important it is to deliver ROM upgrades with new features and bug fixes as soon as possible - the big delay of AKU 2.0 with stereo audio over Bluetooth and push e-mail is just one example...

While E-TEN is the only company by now that provided ROM upgrade for their phones (E-TEN M500) from Windows Mobile 2003 to Windows Mobile 5.0, the availability of upgrades for E-TEN M600 is not the best: the official main E-TEN website offers none but there are some of them floating around at other websites... Let's take a look at various versions of ROM upgrades that are available now for E-TEN M600 and that are coming soon...

First of all to find out what version your E-TEN M600 has, you must go to menu: Settings / System / System Information and then open the node "Software" and check out what is the value of key "Minor Version". Here is description of versions of E-TEN M600 that are available or will be available:
  • 0015 - early version, usually in devices from the prototype phase
  • 0161 - fixed: problems with SD card and other problems, exact list of fixed problems in this version is here
  • 0170 - fixed: problems with Bluetooth GSM sound quality, back light problems, and other some other ; available for download here (in download section)
  • 0171 - contains STD bug fix ; available for download here
  • 0180 - it includes A2DP (stereo audio over Bluetooth) but no push e-mail yet ; not available anywhere yet
  • 0181 - the first version that is supposed to include AKU 2.0 (i.e. both A2DP and push e-mail) ; not available anywhere yet
Conclusion: while E-TEN M600 is a very nice small Pocket PC phone with built-in Wi-Fi and full size SD card slot (not mini-SD), clearly E-TEN corporation is not so good with releasing of ROM upgrades as HP or i-mate are. We hope that this situation will improve, because for the end users, apart from the design and features of the phone, the frequency of ROM updates with bug fixes and new features is the most important criterion when it comes to question "which Windows Mobile phone to buy?"...

Please note: despite claims of some Microsoft employees, there is no Windows Mobile 5.0 device on the market yet that would have AKU 2.0 - either pre-installed or available as separate download.
