HTC Universal also supports fast Wi-Fi (802.11g) ! January 29, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. WARNING: this is not working! HTC Universal has no hardware support for 802.11g(do not use this registry hack - it may cause serious problems in your phone - and it is not working anyway - it can't work due to hardware being 802.11b only)Previously we were reporting, that there is a hack available to activate fast Wi-Fi (i.e. 802.11g) in HTC Wizard... so now can bring you another good news: it is possible to activate 802.11g also in HTC Universal (Orange SPV M5000, i-mate JASJAR, etc)!
Here is description how to do it: We have tested it with HTC Universal (Orange M5000) and it seems to work! The test was done in the following way: a Wi-Fi access point that previously was running in 802.11g-only mode, had to be put into dual mode (802.11b + 802.11g) to support Orange M5000 (HTC Universal), but thanks to making the following changes into registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMask=1 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TIACXWLN1\PARMS: dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8 ... the HTC Universal is able to access Wi-Fi access point that works in 802.11g -only mode. PHM Registry Editor was used to effect this change (but any freeware or commerical registy editor can do it). As before with HTC Wizard, please note: you must reset your phone after making the changes in the registry! Credit: Brendon Ranum from UK/New Zealand.
