O2 XDA Atom - The Jukebox in Your Pocket
January 31, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Lutzh Haedrich.

As you may know the O2 XDA Atom offers an integrated FM Stereo receiver and recorder combined with an equalizer for different sound settings. We have tested the feature including some sound samples for your ears!

by lutzh O2 MediaPlus - an application that comes with your XDA Atom (see image (1.) below) - offers you an variety of features for your eyes and ears. It includes an FM stereo receiver with recording functionality, an equalizer with pre-defined profiles as well as an option for your own sound settings, and some pc-to-device sync options.

Let us take a closer look at the FM receiver at first. At the start of the FM Radio (2.) you'll find the application pre-set for certain areas (3.). As soon as you press the Menu button (4.) you'll find the option to do an automatic scan, set your own region as well as choosing where your recordings will be stored (5.). After your scan you'll find a list of stations - unfortunately by frequency (6.) and not by name since the Atom's FM tuner is not able to show RDS information (e.g. station name or bouqet style like news, rock, classic, etc.). You can edit the names of the stations later on (7.). One feature we are looking a little closer is the record button. You can record broadcasts with it and play back later on. You can choose wave or an proprietary gsm codec for the recordings. You'll find the two minutes test recording below the screenshots. The integrated FM tuner needs the headset attached, since this is the antenna - but you can also use the integrated speakers for your music playback. Check out the images now!

And this is what it sounds like - an un-edited two minutes recording of a German radio program broadcast!

Speaking about the integrated equalizer (1.) now. It offers certain pre-defined profiles (2.) as well as the option to create your own sound set. Kind of cool: the volume setting of the equalizer seems to multiply the volume of the integrated media player (3.) - that really brings the headset (and your ears!) to it's limits!

We run the XDA Atom with a 2 Gigabyte miniSD. That brings lots of music into our pockets. Because of the variety of sound options the Atom is having on board we can easily recomment this device for anyone who is looking for an iPod or any other mobile music player! If you want further information - please check out the attached manual of the XDA Atom and/or feel free to ask in our forums!
