Palm webinar about Treo 700w ended. Bad news: push e-mail delayed SIGNIFICANTLY
February 01, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Microsoft's push e-mail solution may be (almost) revolutionary because it cuts out all the middlemen (or rather middleware for which, users need to pay monthly fees - for example BlackBerry users):

... but according to today's webinar from Palm, where also Microsoft employees were present, the MSFP (i.e. push e-mai) will be released "this year", so it means: not anymore "fist quarter 2006" and not anymore "first half 2006" but "in year 2006". This is big delay. We present hereby transcript of FAQ session (that took place during the webinar) plus whole audio recording of the webinar:

Audio recording of this webinar you can find here (MP3 file, 18.6 MB) and below you can find (partial) transcript of the FAQ session that took place during this webinar (some more interesting points are highlighted with bold font).

Answer: Verizon Wireless provides Wireless Sync both in Individual/Workgroup and Server flavors. It works well with Lotus Notes 5.0.8 and above.

Answer: That is a feature of the Windows Mobile 5 operating system as provided by Microsoft.
Question: we need the phone for our business division, will it function in europe? israel?
Answer: The Verizon products run on the CDMA technology, which is pretty much USA only. The GSM technology is the "world" standard. We'll have Treos for that net later in the year.
Question: Is the default security screen the same as on the Treo 650? Do you still risk emergency calls when entering a password?
Answer: 700w uses the Microsoft Windows Mobile password application, not Palm OS. Feature is designed by Microsoft and you do not risk emergency calls, although Emergency means "911"

Question: How does Windows Mobile 5.0 differ from Windows Mobile 2003?
Answer: Too many things to really list, plus we at Palm made a lot of changes on top of WinMob5 to make it easier. Our big things are how we made one-handed use even better, how you can dial by name from the today screen, and do web searc directly form teh today screen.

Answer: IT will come with the MSFP update later in the year.
Question: Can the device be ordered without camera or permanently(hardware) disabled??

Answer: Good is working on it.
Question: what does dual band mean?
Answer: More coverage in the USA
Question: Why do programs remain running and it is necessary to manually shut them down using the "ok" button.
Answer: This is how any Windows Mobile 5 Phone Edition device works. It is mandated by the operating system. Palm enabled the OK key so that if you press it for 2 seconds, it opens task manager to allow applications shut down
Question: Is it possible for you to give us the capability to sync "NOTES" and "TASKS" with exchange server instead of a desktop computer
Answer: Coming with the MSFP update later in the year.

Answer: That's a VZW deal and I don't know the answer
Question: For e-mail, will the phone be able to sync in real time through a VPN connection for remote telecommuters?

Answer: yes, use the Outlook client
Question: One of the complaints I've seen brought up is that the (60mb) memory that's "user" available is not truly available, and the system runs low on memory resources relatively easily. Are there any plans to address this? Possibly via a more readily accessible resource manager?

Question: Does the MSFP always on HTTP state drain the 700W battery?

Question: I thought Motorola Q which is also A windows Product was able to use 320 x 240 resolution, will Palm be changing the 240 x 240 to 320 x240?

Question: Why is there a black border around the display reducing the viewable screen size?
Answer: That sounds wrong. There should not be a black border
Question: will MSFP be an "over the air" patch?
Answer: No. It will be a desktop install via the cable
Question: since Visto is suing Microsoft due to patent violation in email push, what can Microsoft say to assure owners of Treo 700w that their push e-mail service based on MSFP will not be all of a sudden endangered/stopped ?
Private Answer: Microsoft stands behind its product offerings, and doesn't see any interruption of its service offering. We do not comment on pending legal issues.

Question: i see your answer on the 64 MB RAM, but no review that I have seen (user or institutional) claims more than 32 MB. what are they missing?
Answer: They are mixing Apples with Oranges. 700w has 128MB of NVFS storage and 32MB of SDRAM. The storage space is 64MB allocated to ROM OS image. 4 extra MB is taken by Operating System when running. 60 MB of Storage is available but extensible via SD Card. The 32MB of SDRAM is where programs execute. IE and Media Player reserve cache space here so 14.7MB is initially available. When you close apps, they do not really release the space until you FORCE them down by pressing OK two seconds and chosing Shutdown. A soft reset also clears all un-allocated cache.
Question: Currently, WM 5.0 cannot successfully sync data with Novell Groupwise 6.5 Email Client using the latest version of ActiveSync (4.1). Do you foresee a solution to this in the near future?
Answer: It would come from a third party like Intellisync, iAnyware, or Good

Answer: This is a Microsoft OS... it is .NET savvy! Java is not .Net savvy. However, NSIcom has released a WM5 Java VM.
Question: Does the Treo 700w bluetooth radio support stereo headsets?
Answer: No. So far no one I know supports what's called A2DP protocol for bluetooth yet

Question: Where can I find the desktop sync software mentioned?
Answer: www.windowsmobile.com - look for ActiveSync 4.1
Question: A comment for Microsoft: Better documentation would be nice. Exchange ActiveSync works just find without the MSFP works
Answer: Yes. It is called Exchange ActiveSync. You require Exchange 2003 at a minimum. Exchange SP2 and MSFP (later this spring) for IP Push. Why would you consider the sync with an https connections any more of a push that the functionality right now using SMS text messages?
