Next Windows Mobile smartphone leaked on FCC : Mercury made by Inventec February 07, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. The FCC website is a vast source of mobile phone scoops - because phones need to pass FCC compliance tests before they arrive to the US market, and this time FCC diggers have discovered a Windows Mobile powered phone with QWERTY keyboard of code name "Mercury":
It is manufactured by Inventec in Taiwan - a company that Palm was using in past to produce many Palm OS based PDAs - so it may well be sold and branded by Palm.... Unfortunately it is not particularly appealing: ... because it lacks UMTS. Yes, it is a GSM/GPRS device, it has Bluetooth, it misses out on Wi-Fi, but most importantly it doesn't have UMTS, what these days means one of 2 things: either this is an ultra cheap model for mass market, or Palm (or Inventec) simply totally misses the point as far as mobile phone requirements in Europe are! To original source of the story at FCC website is here. Interstingly from the user manual present there one can see that this phone will have resoultion 320x240 pixels and not 240x240 as in Treo 700w.
