O2 Xda Atom on the inside : photo review February 07, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Xda Atom is a fantastic Pocket PC phone: not only it has built-in Wi-Fi, 2 megapixel camera and FM radio (!), but it is also the smallest Pocket PC phone in the world. Available now at O2 Asia in East Asia and Australia, one can purchase it also from online shops in USA and EU. Soon also HP will re-brand it and sell under iPaq name. It also has A2DP (stereo audio over Bluetooth) and works in very stable way (after latest fresh ROM upgrade). Many people, who are pondering which new Windows Mobile phone to buy, may be wondering: how Xda Atom looks like from the inside? Under the battery? Here is how Xda Atom looks like, when you take away the battery (please note: it is Made in China):
The built-in camera of Xda Atom has 2 megapixel, but is equipped also with flash light (LED based, so not so strong as full blown flash) and with mini-mirror for self-portraits:
The SIM locking mechanism is solid and with simple "open" and "lock" moves you can exchange SIM cards easily:
Interestingly the battery is "Made in Taiwan", is of relatively big capacity (1530 mAh - more than in HTC Magician and HTC Wizard) and is of the latest generation (Lithium Polymer):
Xda Atom features mini-USB socket (industry standard! you can get such cable in almost any computer shop!), so you can re-use your old mini-USB cables:
Here you can see a label with guarantee seal:
... but it is Asian guarantee, so if you get Xda Atom imported, you might have to send the device to Asia, to get it repaired, if it would break. Fortunately by now Xda Atom works very well and after installation of latest ROM upgrade, also quite fast and in a stable way. Conclusion: Xda Atom is a fantastic Pocket PC phone and since not everybody needs UMTS/3G, the built-in Wi-Fi and EDGE with which Atom is equipped, may be sufficient for many people. The built-in FM radio is more, than just "the icing on the cake": you can record auditions or songs in this radio directly to the memory card! If you are too scared to buy Xda Atom under "Atom" brand - re-imported from Asia - don't worry: it's coming soon also under HP iPAQ brand!
