3GSM 2006 coverage : getting nitty-gritty with the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox T810 and T830 phones February 13, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Let's take a closer look at object of our desire:
... and no, we don't mean the woman (from the stand of Fujitsu-Siemens at 3GSM 2006), but we mean the mobile phone that she holds in her hand: Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox T830! Before we will start talking about Fujitsu-Siemens stand at 3GSM 2006 and about their phones in details (including audio recording of our chit-chat with Fujitsu-Siemens staff), let's take a look first at a comparative photo of Fujitsu-Siemens new T830 phone (first from the left) compared to HP iPAQ hw6900 series phone (second from the left), g-smart (third from the left) and Palm Treo 700w (first from the right):
(photo above: courtesy of John Starkweather from Microsoft) The stand of Fujitsu-Siemens at 3GSM was rather modest - one table, 3 stools and just 2 employees of Fujitsu-Siemens (both Germans, on the photo: also some 2 visitors present):
The Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox phones were presented to us by this nice lady:
One phone was mounted and fixed, so that people could play with it:
... and another one was on the loose and used for demonstrations, for example like this one, that presents what hides under the battery of the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox T830:
If somebody would have any doubts, that this Loox phone has indeed built-in GPS, one could show the external antenna connector, with satellite symbol near it:
We have had however even more doubts whether indeed this phone has built-in GPS so we requested to launch some GPS navigation application and prove it. The lady from Fujitsu-Siemens launched Navigon (that will be included with this phone in some countries - and in some countries it will be different software) and selected menu position "Settings / GPS" where the software automatically recognized that GPS receiver is built-in and available on port COM6:
Obviously the stand of Fujitsu-Siemens was inside the building, so GPS signal reception was zero, therefore we couldn't test it, but seeing external GPS antenna connector and GPS navigation software detecting GPS receiver, convinced us that indeed this phone, apart from UMTS support has also built-in GPS! This phone will be available commercially around July 2006 (warning: but only for Europe and Middle East = EMEA, not for USA), so no wonder that Windows Mobile 5.0 in this phone is of latest version, including push email (and AKU 2, what is visible in version number - note 3 last digits):
Finally, when playing with Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox T830 we have noticed "USB Mode" icon in settings, but the lady from Fujitsu-Siemens couldn't answer the question what it could be:
Generally the Loox T830 and T810 are fantastic phones, that deliver at last built-in QWERTY keyboard, UMTS, built-in GPS (latest generation: Sirf III!), built-in Wi-Fi (also 802.11g!) - all in one small device. The T810 is totally camera-less and it doesn't even have camera for video calls - because this model is for enterprises, that demand no camera phones on their premises. The T830 has 2 cameras - one with 2 megapixels on the back and one of VGA resolution on the front (it is hidden under sliding mechanism). The Intel PXA270 processor of 416 MHz seems to be powerful enough for this phone (considering that it has only display of only 240x240 pixels) and built-in Bluetooth of version 2.0 also is not bad. For more information about these fantastic phones from German-Japanese company Fujitsu-Siemens, please visit official home page of the Fujitsu-Siemens T series phones (this URL was printed in the paper handouts provided on the stand): www.fujitsu-siemens.com/pocket_loox_t.
