3GSM 2006 coverage : getting nitty-gritty with Nokia about Push Email
February 14, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R.
What? The most vehemently pro-Microsoft website is interviewing Nokia all of a sudden? Has hell frozen over? Well, since Microsoft has licensed wireless ActiveSync technology also to Nokia - the number one globally mobile phone manufacturer in the world - we felt obliged to find out what is going on out there at Nokia with Push Email things. So here comes an audio interview with Nokia employee from Finland (he holds in his hand the Blackberry-like Nokia e61 smartphone):
... who was at Nokia stand at 3GSM at the part of the stand devoted to Push Email topics at Nokia.
The full audio recording of a the interview with him you can find here and here is the slide, in which Nokia describes what is ActiveSync and how it fits with Nokia:
Here are the highlights from this interview and highlights of Nokia's Push Email strategy:
- only 2 phone models of Nokia will have wireless ActiveSync embedded in them - compared to ALL Windows Mobile 5.0 phones (even low end ones): it will be Nokia E61 (the one that looks like BlackBerry and has QWERTY keyboard for single handed usage) and Nokia E70 (that has special big keyboard for 2 hand usage) - both powered by Symbian Series 60. Both these phones are coming to the market around March 2006 (very soon: next month!). In other words: not all Symbian phones from Nokia will offer wireless ActiveSync and thus Microsoft Exchange synchronization - at this moment it will be just these 2 models.
- those Symbian Series 60 phones that will support ActiveSync and MS Exchange synchronization have no tousch screens but all Pocket PC phones have touch screen.
- Nokia supports several push email clients from their partners: BlackBerry, Oracle Collabration Services, Visto, IBM, ActiveSync, Good Link, etc.
- while some other clients of Push Email are not always presented in the phone or must be separately downloaded, the Nokia E61 and Nokia E70 have always wireless ActiveSync from Microsft pre-installed
- Nokia lately purchased IntelliSync company that produces push email software and device management software. In this way Nokia also makes software for Windows Mobile because now IntelliSync employees are Nokia employees.
- now Nokia has 3 its own push email solutions: Nokia Business Centre (its own push email solution for business customers), IntelliSync (push email) and "Push email over MMS" (a solution for cheap phones and for mass market)
- Nokia phones for push email (Nokia E61 and Nokia E70) are constructed with use of modern technologies like single core processor and utilize economy of scale of Nokia, so they will be very competitive offering - mainly due to the low price and offering already both UMTS and 802.11g Wi-Fi.
