3GSM 2006 coverage: audio interview with John Starkweather from Microsoft
February 14, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Sometimes frank discussion is very important, particularly if it is discussion with Microsoft, that is often being accused by open source lovers, Linux devotees, Symbian fanatics and other tree hugging hippies of having "trust problem".

Here we present interview with John Starkweather from Microsoft's mobile division:

... who is Windows Mobile focused manager at Mobile and Embedded Division of Microsoft. He is also caretaker of invite-only Mobius conference and he was moderator of Microsoft press conferences at 3GSM 2005 and 2006. He had the following devices on him during the interview (these are: Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox T830, HP iPAQ hw6915, g-Smart i, Palm Treo 700w):

We will present full transcript of this interview in one of the upcoming news items in near future, but in meantime you can listen to the whole interview here . Here is the list of topics discussed:

--- several operators offering Windows Mobile upgrades with push email - over next months

--- he was showing (had on him) Fujitsu-Siemens Loox phone, Treo 700w, g-smart i (one of 2 released models of g-smart) and HP iPAQ hw6900 series phone

--- issue of leaked ROM images (i.e. upgrades)

--- Microsoft offers FULL LEGAL PROTECTION to all Windows Mobile manufacturers - so that they can make Windows Mobile phones without fear of being sued by Visto or anybody else

--- using name "Windows Mobile" and "Windows" in Internet domain names

--- Palm's customizations of Windows Mobile platform

--- issue of one handed usage of Windows Mobile for Pocket PC

--- why 240x240 in so many Pocket PC phones seen lately? Because Microsoft is not offering 320x320 resolution in Windows Mobile and while 480x480 is available, displays with such resolution are too expensive. However Microsoft would gladly introduce support for 320x320 - if only some manufacturers would request it - as Motorola demanded the 320x240 landscape support and obtained it. If Microsoft would get request for 320x320, it would do it.

--- Windows Mobile Photon

--- why to buy Windows Mobile Treo if Palm OS Treo with the same hardware will be soon available?

--- Motorola Q

--- Windows Mobile has 47 OEMs now

--- synergies between Microsoft Exchange Server and Windows Mobile

--- push email issues

--- why to buy Windows Mobile phone if now Symbian phones also support wireless ActiveSync and synchronization with Microsoft Exchange Server ?

--- why it would be good idea for Nokia and Sony Ericsson to make Windows Mobile phones

--- issues of Linux and Symbian

--- why Windows Mobile for Portable Media Centers (PMC) cannot run 3rd party software, while Sony PSP can run 3rd party software and Sony PSP may soon be released as a smartphone with mobile phone in it?

--- PMC versus Windows Mobile

--- gaming in Windows Mobile

--- connecting Windows Mobile phones to Xbox 360
