Confirmation: the reason why many Pocket PC phones offer now 240x240 resolution February 16, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. We have revealed it first in the world in an interview with John Starkweather from 3GSM 2006 and just one day after this interview, another Microsoft employee confirmed, that we were right. The bottom line is that many Pocket PC phones nowadays have inferior 240x240 resolution because Windows Mobile 5.0 doesn't support 320x320 resolution and the next square screen resolution supported is 480x480. However when it comes to prices of touch screens, the screens with 480x480 are too expensive, so Pocket PC phone manufacturers, who wanted to use square resolution in order to accommodate QWERTY keyboard, were forced into 240x240. We uncovered it first! ... and now another Microsoft employee confirms it: We actively talked about doing 320x320. But we decided against it for a number of reasons. The first was that there's no good backward compatibility story for it. You can pixel double, but "pixel one and a half" doesn't work very well. The next was that there's not much of a growth path for 320x320. Hardware vendors told us that they had no plans to make 640x640 screens (where they do have plans to make 480x480 screens). [...] Conclusion: unfortunately due to historical reasons we are stuck with 240x240 resolution - as the most cost effective square resolution for Windows Mobile - and this may hinder a bit sales of some new Pocket PC phones, however hopefully hardware manufacturers will understand that 320x240 in landscape mode is also usable in phones with QWERTY keyboard as examples of Motorola Q and Samsung i320 prove it. So after all, at the end of the day, it is not Microsoft's fault that so many new Pocket PC phones have smaller resolution even than new (and cheaper) Microsoft smartphone devices...
