i-mate fails to deliver on promise + learn more about AKU2 February 23, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. Update 1: the more reliable release date of AKU2 by i-mate added (see at the end of this news item). During interview with Jim Morrison - CEO of i-mate, he promissed that ROM upgrade with Push Email for all Windows Mobile 5.0 devices branded by i-mate will be released by February 23, 2006.... but it didn't happen! This upgrade is known also as "AKU 2.0" (AKU2) or as "MSFP" and it includes also stereo audio over Bluetooth, remote device wipe, and other features, so while we are waiting for mobile operators and distributors to release ROM upgrades with AKU2 - what should happen within weeks, not months - let's take a closer look at AKU2: AKU is short for Adaptation Kit Update, and is somewhat similar to the concept of the Service Pack for Windows or any other Microsoft product. It’s a collection of enhancements, new applications and bug fixes to improve the software. On your PC you use Windows Update, which connects to Microsoft and downloads software updates to your machine. In the Mobile Device world it’s a little different – Microsoft releases the software to its partners (eg. Dell, HP, HTC), who then make it work with their products and release it to their customers (such as mobile operators O2 or T-Mobile). An AKU is only made available if the OEM chooses to make it available – so choose your equipment vendor carefully! In addition, the OEM decides which features to enable on their devices, even if Microsoft has included software support in their core software. The hardware must be capable of supporting software enhancements – and if the software compromises performance or leads to a poor experience, the OEM is quite correct to disable it.
