Microsoft cooperates with mobile industry on Architecture for Premium Mobile Games February 25, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. Interestingly both Texas Instruments (TI) and Samsung - manufacturers of processors for Windows Mobile phones - are present in this initiative, but unfortunately Intel is missing... Leading companies in the wireless and mobile gaming value chain have joined forces to define and support an open gaming architecture for premium-quality native games for mobile phones. [...] “We are excited to work with TI to continue advancing the mobile gaming architecture,” said Peter Bernard, Group Product Manager at Microsoft. “This collaboration will help enable developers to show best-of-breed implementations on an expanding range of Windows Mobile-based phones while enabling them to be more effective in their porting investments. This ultimately brings a wider range of new quality titles to consumers and mobile operator ecosystems.” To learn more click here (the original source of this story at website of Symbian, that also cooperates in this initiative). Conclusion: this example shows that Microsoft is also working with mobile industry on standards and platforms, and is not just releasing its own APIs. At this time it can't be said yet for sure what this initiative will bring to Windows Mobile phones, but probably it will be bring: - hardware support for 3D gaming in Windows Mobile phones - gaming API in Windows Mobile phones that will be similar to gaming API in other smartphone platforms (thus making porting to Windows Mobile easier)
