No 3G (UMTS) phones from HP in 2006 ! March 06, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Not only HP has very big delay when it comes to releasing Windows Mobile 5.0 phones (the HP iPAQ hw6900 until today has not been released) , not only HP uses outdated GPS chipset in their phones, but now HP also confirms that it will not release any UMTS phones this year! It looks like HP is becoming nothing else than a brand that is taking existing designs and re-branding them with "HP" label - as example of Xda Atom shows... and the fact that HP is so backward with 3G shows! Hewlett-Packard (HP) won't be bringing 3G support to any of its smart phones until at least 2007. It cites the costs associated with the service, coupled with the fact that 3G's killer app -- TV and video streaming -- isn't yet viable on mobile phones as the primary reasons for its decision. "3G is still only occupying 3% of the world pie," HP's Vice-President for Consumer Products and Mobile Business Group in the Asia-Pacific region, Chin-Teik SEE, told CNET.com.au at the company's "magical mobility launch" event in Hong Kong last week. Apparently the fact that customers actually need UMTS phones means nothing to HP, that was showing in past - for example by not releasing ROM upgrades to Windows Mobile 5.0 - that it doesn't respect its own customers... We recommend to buy phones by other manufacturers, particularly those that respect customers and release UMTS phones: HTC, Fujitsu-Siemens, Palm, Motorola, etc. ... but not at HP! ![]()
