CeBIT 2006 coverage: first hand report from Microsoft press conference March 09, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. This was the press conference, where Origami (UMPC) was unveiled publicly by Microsoft for the first time in the history:
Not only we were there on location and we provide hereby original photos and full, uncut, audio recording, but also it was our reporter, who asked the last question in FAQ session, that ended this press conference !!! It was also the most important question asked there.... Read on! Christoph Wilfert, who is COO of Microsoft Germany, was speaking most of the time in this press conference and he was "the boss":
... but apart from Christoph Wilfert (the first from the right on photo below) there were other speakers, including 2 Germans and an an English speaking American (the second from the right on photo below) who presented the Microsoft Origami (now known as Ultra Mobile PC):
Photo above presents them standing together at the end - ready to answer questions in FAQ session at the end of the press conference.
Origami was presented as something, that fills the gap between Windows Mobile PDAs and phones, and Windows XP notebooks and Tablet PCs:
Origami or "Ultra Mobile PC" is intended to be a new category of devices or platform, and at CeBIT 2006 and during the press conferences apart from models from Intel also models from Asus and Samsung were presented:
Then some screenshots from Origami were presented, including the one that shows that Origami is powered by regular Windows XP so Microsoft Office works with it too:
Despite the fact that typical Windows XP applications are running in Origami, Microsoft prepared special touch screen based user interface for Origami, that is used for playing video recordings:
... and generally for everything (and is easy to use with finger rather than stylus or digitizer):
Before the American guy started presenting and unveiling the Microsoft Origami, Christoph Wilfert and the other Germans were presenting other slides, that we present here shortly (some of them, not all): firstly came distiction between appliations for business and applications for private life:
Then some new Windows Mobile phones were presented with stress on Push Email ability:
Microsoft also presented Digital Lifestyle with use of Microsoft technologies (note Palm Treo 700w in this picture):
Here is the roadmap of Microsoft products and their release dates, where you can see Windows Vista coming in second half of 2006 what may be even December 2006:
As mentioned above at the end there was FAQ session where people from audience (i.e. journalists) were asking questions to the speakers. Thanks to this guy from Microsoft, who was handpicking people from the audience to ask questions:
... our reporter was able to ask the very last question in the whole press conference: "whether Origami supports multi-touch user interface or only single touch?" and the American guy answered something like "it is single-touch but in future versions based on Windows Vista it will be also multi-touch".
