Windows Mobile phones at CeBIT 2006 - overview March 10, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. Let's be candid here: CeBIT 2006 was not very good for Windows Mobile phones! Apart from such highlights like HTC Hermes Pocket PC phone for 3G/UMTS and Samsung SGH-i310 music smartphone with 8 GB hard disk, nothing very ground-breaking or extraordinarily interesting in area of Windows Mobile phones was presented at CeBIT 2006 - we are disappointed! ... so let's take a look at some Windows Mobile phones at CeBIT 2006! BenQ was delaying the P50 phone for years and now BenQ came up with BenQ Siemens P51 phone, that hopefully (due to Siemens influences) will not be so much delayed as the predecessor:
Fortunately BenQ Siemens P51 is powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 at last:
... but it has only 1.3 megapixel camera (nowadays 2 megapixel is a standard):
... and it lacks EDGE and UMTS, but thanks to built-in Wi-Fi, built-in GPS and the QWERTY keyboard, it may find some fans. Asus was not showing the 3G flip smartphone but instead it was showing Asus P525 Pocket PC phone:
... that could be interesting if it had QWERTY keyboard or at least UMTS support. E-TEN was presenting in the Hall 26 (which is the main hall for mobile phones) the E-TEN M600 (to the left) and E-TEN G500 (to the right):
G500 has built-in GPS with TMC and both these E-TEN phones are powered by fast Samsung processor of 400 MHz that is as fast as Intel XScale processor of 520 MHz. Speaking of Intel XScale processor of 520 MHz - in a hall dedicated to GPS based navigation solutions the Mitac's daughter company - Mio Technologies - had a stand, where Mio A701 Pocket PC phone was presented - powered by such a processor (as you can see on the display):
Mio's stand however was in majority devoted to GPS based navigation kits with displays and Mio A701 was the only phone on their stand. Clearly focus of Mio and their most revenues come from GPS products! Samsung disappointed us a lot because Samsung i320 phone - the one with QWERTY keyboard and powered by Microsoft Smartphone platform - was not presented at all! Fortunately Samsung presented the Samsung SGH-i310 music smartphone with 8 GB hard disk and Pocket PC phones with WiMax wireless technology:
... and Pocket PC phones with UWB (Ultra-Wideband) technology:
... and also Samsung i750 (the GSM phone with cellphone keypad instead of QWERTY keyboard) and Samsung i830 (the one that combined GSM and CDMA EVDO) were presented:
All in all: when it comes to Windows Mobile phones, the CeBIT 2006 was disappointing because nothing really new was presented - all products were announced already before - online or at 3GSM 2006. It is difficult to say which of these presented phones will become available soon and which will be released too late to make any impact or not released at all. When it comes to HP - it didn't even bother to have a stand at CeBIT. Motorola was not showing mobile phones at their own stand at all - redirecting people to stands of operators and distributors - but obviously Motorola Q was not presented at all and it looks certain that Motorola Q for GSM/UMTS will not be released this year anymore. There is big hurdle to overcome for Windows Mobile phones: availability of relatively small phones for 3G/UMTS and this year's CeBIT show proved that this hurdle has not been overcome yet. Unfortunately Windows Mobile phones have been overshadowed at CeBIT 2006 by Origami/Ultra Mobile PC devices:
... so still there is no real breakthrough in area of Windows Mobile phones and it looks like we will have to wait for CeBIT 2007 to achieve it.
