Sling Media blames lack of Windows Mobile version of their player on mobile operators March 11, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. UMPC (also known as "Origami" or "Ultra Mobile PC") has just been announced and similarly like with release of Windows Mobile 5.0 it is opportunity for companies to announce support for this new platform: Sling Media, Inc., a digital lifestyle products company, announced a customized version of its SlingPlayer software, designed specifically for products based on the Ultra-Mobile PC. Slingbox owners will now have a new way of watching and controlling their home television from just about anywhere, using an Ultra-Mobile PC combined with a standard broadband Internet connection. So UMPC devices are not being sold yet and they already support them? Furthermore Slingle Media writes more rather blatant lies: Sling Media's first product, the Slingbox, is a breakthrough consumer electronics device that enables consumers to watch their living room TV programming from wherever they are by turning virtually any Internet-connected Windows-based laptop or desktop and any Windows Mobile-based PDA or smartphone into a personal TV. Conclusion: don't buy anything from Sling Media until you will see specific functionality (like player for Windows Mobile) available already at the time of purchase! In a rather informal reports (not published by them officially on their website) Sling Media is blaming mobile operators (known in USA under name "wireless carriers") for the fact, that Sling player for Windows Mobile (that makes it possible to watch your TV remotely on your phone) has not been released yet! Allegedly mobile operators (in USA) are not friendly towards Sling Media because they prefer to run their own services and collect money instead of becoming just a dummy pipe to the Internet. However Sling Media fails to notice that many Windows Mobile users in fact use Wi-Fi and are not restricted by mobile operators at all! The version of Sling player for Windows Mobile is scheduled to be released in first quarter of 2006 (meaning: by the end of March 2006) but Sling Media is using phrases like it would have been already launched! The fact is that sooner or later Microsoft will include remote viewing feature for Windows Mobile devices in their Windows XP Media Center Edition and then whole Sling Media concept will be lost in irrelevance, so that's why Sling Media tries to generate maximum buzz in minimum time - also by bribing editors with free hardware! Anyway: it is typical for Microsoft that, although people within Microsoft like each other on personal level, they don't cooperate professionally, so we can see XBox 360 that is not working with Windows Mobile at all (although it works with iPod and Sony PSP) and we can see Windows XP Media Center Edition without any way to control it through Windows Mobile... End of March 2006 is coming soon and let's see if Sling Meida will keep its promise and release their player for Windows Mobile!
