Sling Media explains March 12, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. Apparently our previous story about Sling Media and Windows Mobile contained (according to them) some inaccuracies, so here we present some quotes from Jeremy Toeman, VP, Market Development, Sling Media: your subject line is “Sling Media blames lack of Windows Mobile version of their player on mobile operators” – can you please tell me where we did this? If anything, I have spent the past few weeks posting on various Web sites and blogs claiming the exact OPPOSITE of this. ... on my blog on the SlingCommunity Web site, I posted this article: http://www.slingcommunity.com/blog/9/11942/ in which I never “blame” anyone for anything. Next, you write: “So UMPC devices are not being sold yet and they already support them?” – well, we’ve had access to the developer platform for quite some time, and have worked directly with Microsoft on this. The example here would be like when the Xbox360 first launched, and there were already games available. You also state: “However Sling Media fails to notice that many Windows Mobile users in fact use Wi-Fi and are not restricted by mobile operators at all! The version of Sling player for Windows Mobile is scheduled to be released in first quarter of 2006 (meaning: by the end of March 2006) but Sling Media is using phrases like it would have been already launched!” – Can you show me exactly the source for this statement? We have not slipped schedules, nor ever claimed it would have been ready prior to now. Also, the SlingPlayer Mobile software will support not only WiFi networking, but will also support USB and Bluetooth tethering to PCs. Finally, you write: “also by bribing editors with free hardware” – in the consumer electronics world, all professional journalists receive “free” hardware to review, but they are not free units for the reviewers. The journalists and editors are expected to use, review, and then return the device; this is considered standard in the industry. While it’s true that we do not end up getting back 100% of the review units we send out, that is most certainly the expectations and intents! Do you think editors for Cnet or PC Magazine go out and purchase every laptop and plasma display they review? * * * * * Since Jeremy Toeman from Sling Media requested, that we post a new story with explanations (instead of correcting/augmenting of the old story) - so we do it hereby! However we have basis for our former claims - from various sources - and we will wait till end of March 2006 to see whether the promise of Sling Media - to release Sling player for Windows Mobile "by the end of first quarter 2006" - will be kept or not... and we will post a further follow-up then (i.e. in April 2006 at the latest)... However "keeping it real" and "customer satisfaction of end users" are our highest priorities so we will not bow to any companies, including Sling Media.
