CeBIT 2006: lackluster show about Windows Mobile at Microsoft stand March 15, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. We have been writing about Microsoft stand at CeBIT 2006 previously - and we mentioned there total errors like putting Windows Mobile part in hall 4 with other Microsoft areas instead of locating it in hall 26 (dedicated to mobile phones) and giving partner stands to the same companies instead of picking new ones each year etc. However probably the mere fact that Microsoft's presence is organized by Microsoft Germany is a mistake - after all CeBIT is a global event where people from all over the world are coming! Example of another debacle organized by Microsoft Germany at stand of Microsoft at CeBIT 2006 was a presentation (show) in "Microsoft theatre" part of the stand of Microsoft, where once a day a presentation about Windows Mobile 5.0 in English was given (more than 50% of presentations there were in German). This presentation was given not by an English native speaker, and on top of that by somebody who was not particularly passionate about Windows Mobile (as Dale Coffing was at 3GSM and CES) and essentially quality of this presentation was low (cheesy 3D effects cannot make up for poor content consisting of such boring things as empty IE and streaming of Steve Ballmer from 3GSM - for God's sake they could at least open some web page with IE and show streaming of some music or TV and not of balding Ballmer!):
Actually for this "difficult" (or not important enough?) task Microsoft has employed external person - Rolf Kluge from VisionVoice company:
The division into smartphone and Pocket PC "editions" was shortly mentioned:
... but in reality whole idea of this presentation - that was supposed to be about Windows Mobile (!?) - was to sell server software like Live Communications Server (that requires "Microsoft Office Communicator" - available for XP and for Windows Mobile too ; please notice that in the presentation rudimentary emulator was used and not even a real Windows Mobile device!):
... and to sell a software like Live Meeting:
... and to sell a software like Microsoft Exchange Server (because now it can push emails presumably; please note word "Technologie" in this slide, - word, that means "Technology" in German and proves that this whole presentation was just a rough translation from German presentation):
All in all it was lackluster show and if one haven't had any contact with Windows Mobile phones before, one would think that Windows Mobile is just a tiny addition to Microsoft server software and not a good product that can stand on its own. Clearly it is time that Microsoft USA (i.e. headquarters) will take over organization of Microsoft's presence at CeBIT - a global show after all, where people from various countries are coming, not just from Germany - because Microsoft Germany is not capable to help the cause of Windows Mobile at all. They are waste of money. * * * * * In case you don't believe us, that this presentation was lackluster, please listen to audio recording of this show
