CeBIT 2006: audio interview with Clare Fan from Gigabyte
March 16, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Gigabyte is total newcomer when it comes to windows Mobile phones but they are starting with some fascinating handsets and right away they offer something that nobody else offers: small handsets that offer not only built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 2 megapixel camera with macro (!), FM radio, ... but they offer also built-in TV tuner (now: analog PAL/NTSC, around July 2006 also: DVB-T and DVB-H!)! Gigabyte is a very succesful corporation making servers, mainboards and storage devices, so they have a lot of power to produce fantastic Windows Mobile phones!

Here we present audio interview with a manager from Gigabyte corporation - Clare Fan:

... where we gain some interesting insight into their phones (that we share with you!) and we give advice to Gigabyte: how to beat Nokia and HTC! Read on!

Imagery for related to this audio interview follows - selected highlights from this interview you can find below and to listen to this interview click here .

Both g-smart and g-smart i are narrower than HTC Magician:

Obviously g-smart is thicker than HTC Magician (because it has slide out keypad!) but g-smart i is approximately as thick as HTC Magician:

Interestingly both g-smart phones have built-in answering machine:

... and have interesting "overdub" feature where owner of g-smart phones can play some background noise and thus pretend, that he is in other place, than his current location:

... and have built-in ability to record phone calls (!):

Both these phones from GIGABYTE have mini-USB (industry standard! no need to buy proprietary cables!):

Generally idea is that one of these phones has slide out keypad and the other one has no keypad but is thinner:

Here are specifications of these 2 phones - as they were on display at CeBIT:

Some more highlights from this interview:
  • g-smart is on sale in Taiwan already... and g-smart i goes on sale in Taiwan around April 2006, in Europe: later - probably around June/July (depends on testing)
  • the CeBIT 2006 was the first time when g-smart and g-smart-i phones were launched for Europe
  • g-smart is open to mobile operators and wants to sell also under their brands
  • at this moment both Gigabyte's phones powered by Windows Mobile are tri-band and there are no plans to launch them in USA (they lack 850 band but could work in USA on 1900 band obviously)
  • A2DP (stereo audio over Bluetooth) is supported by both these phones - also Push Email is already pre-installed
  • g-smart and g-smart-i phones are the same internally - processor 416 MHz, built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, TV tuner (analog: NTSC and PAL), FM radio, mini-USB (standard!), camera of resolution 2.1 megapixel with macro (close-up-s!) function - but g-smart has slide out keyboard and g-smart i has no slide out keyboard
  • there were some problems to catch FM radio station during interview - because this interview took place in a room enclosed by layers of metal walls (i.e. with weak reception)
  • around July 2006 Gigabyte wants to release g-smart phones but with digital TV in standards: DVB-T (for retail) and DVB-H (for operator branded handsets)
  • both these phones have some very interesting features not to be found in other Windows Mobile phones: built-in answering machine, ability to play "background noise effects" during phone calls (i.e. pretending that you are in a meeting, while in reality you are in a pub, etc) and recording phone conversations! --- all built-in !
  • the FM radio from this phones have no RDS support in current version of software, but probably support for RDS will be added later (it's not certain though - Gigabyte will research this issue yet)
  • the g-smart i is thinner than g-smart - due to lack of keypad
  • our feedback about how to improve Gigabyte's Windows Mobile phones has been passed and also some suggestions how to increase sales
  • Gigabyte is not scared of HTC
