Not rumor anymore: Microsoft is working on Xbox Mobile to compete both with Apple iPod and Sony PSP March 21, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R. It looks like new category of devices powered by Microsoft software will emerge!!! After Windows Mobile for Pocket PC, Smartphone and Portable Media Center (PMC), after Tablet PC and Origami (Ultra Mobile PC), yet another platform is under development: Xbox Mobile - that is being designed both for mobile gaming and for portable player market. Unfortunately Microsoft people have very badly failed in PMC area - these devices can't run any 3rd party software and their potential is totally not utilized, so there is big gap that is now being filled by such successful products as Sony PSP and Apple iPod, so Microsoft needs urgently to come up with new product/platform. Unfortunately Xbox Mobile will be released in year 2008, what will give enough time to competition to release Apple iPod with tablet and multi-touch touch screen functionality and new Sony PSP 2, with more power and longer battery life. Microsoft once again is in "catching up game" and is following others, instead of being leader in innovations... read on! By anchoring its entertainment device as a handheld game player, Microsoft is starting from its position of strength in the entertainment business that it hopes Apple cannot match, even with its iPod. Game industry publications, circulating rumors of this development, have dubbed it an ``iPod killer,'' but its functions would probably more closely resemble Sony's PlayStation Portable multimedia gaming device, sources say. The product might not be ready for market for at least a year, and maybe two. [...] In an interview with Business Week in January, Xbox corporate vice president Peter Moore referred to a new product under development and said, ``It can't just be our version of the iPod.''
