Happy Birthday dear Palm! - 10 Year Anniversary of Palm Inc March 28, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. We wish however, that Palm Inc could stop reveling in 10 year history and instead start releasing Windows Mobile Treo smartphones also for GSM/EDGE/UMTS ...
Palm writes: Palm has many important constituencies to thank for its success, including [...] Developers, who support Palm products with innovative consumer and enterprise software applications that today number more than 29,000 for the Palm OS platform alone, plus hardware peripherals such as keyboards, GPS devices and barcode readers. When Palm expanded its platform choices for smartphones to include the Windows Mobile platform, its developer community grew again. (read more here) Apart from above mentioned thanks to Windows Mobile developers, Palm is not mentioning Microsoft at all in their 10 year anniversary press releases. Apparently Palm is not appreciating Microsoft strong enough yet... and it may well be that Windows Mobile is just a temporary solution for Palm - valid so long as there is no workable Linux version of Palm OS (now called "Access Linux Platform" = ALP)... There are rumors that some low-end Palm smartphones are coming as well as some top notch ones - some of them powered by Windows Mobile. Timing however will be very crucial and if GSM/EDGE/UMTS versions of these phones will not be released in year 2006 yet (as it is with UMTS version of Motorola Q that is presumably scheduled for 2007), then Palm Treo smartphones will remain just a local, American, story... and will be beaten by operator branded phones manufactured by HTC, or by UMTS phones from Fujitsu-Siemens... with no chances to gain any significant market share overseas.
