These SDKs are not cheap and their prices start at 1000 USD, so they are targeting rather enterprise developers, and although Socket's accessories like some barcode and RFID scanners are usable over Bluetooth also by Palm and Symbian devices, several accessories from Socket are in form of SD cards and are usable only by Windows Mobile devices... * * * * * Socket Enhances Developer Program with Improved SDKs and Priority Support for SVI and OEM Customers Growth in Strategic Vertical Integrators, OEMs and Enterprise Deployments Drive SDK Enhancements Socket Communications a provider of mobile productivity products, announced enhancements to its growing Developer Program. These enhancements benefit Strategic Vertical Integrator (SVI) and OEM developers as well as enterprise customers actively using one of the leading Socket SDKs to develop mobile applications. Program enhancements offer developers significant benefits and incentives including priority support and the latest tools and sample code to rapidly deliver custom applications. Designed to assist developers with answers to technical questions and general inquiries, new web-based portals provide support. In addition to 20 hours of consultation, qualified developers obtain access to a priority support website, which directs queries to Application Engineers in Development Services rather than standard Technical Support. Developers receive access to all SDK updates. Additional benefits include on-line documentation, FAQs, and technical articles for each SDK. Developers interested in the advanced Socket SDKs are able to review the purchasing qualifications and preview the content to determine if the SDK will meet development needs. SDK information is available online at: http://www.socketcom.com/sdk/. Current Socket SDKs include the industry leading SocketScan for bar code and RFID scanning, along with the Socket Wi-Fi Companion for wireless LAN application development. The SocketScan keyboard emulation software directs scanned bar code data into any Windows, Palm or Symbian application as virtual keystrokes. The SocketScan SDK supports numerous programming languages and OS platforms, and is available for Windows CE with .NET language support in VB and C#. It also supports all of the Socket bar code scanners and RFID readers, including the combination CF RFID reader-bar code scanner card. The latest SocketScan SDK supports mobile devices operating on Windows Mobile 5.0 and Visual Studio 2005 such as the Socket Magnetic Stripe Reader and Cordless Ring Scanner. Along with relevant documentation and binaries, developers are also provided with an extensive sample source code library, saving weeks of development time and providing the ability to quickly deliver products to market. Separate SocketScan SDKs are also available for users of Palm, Symbian, Windows XP devices, with an additional SDK for Windows Tablet XP devices to be available in April 2006. The Wi-Fi Companion SDK contains APIs to control and query the Wi-Fi profiles, network configuration parameters and wireless performance statistics. The SDK supports most mainstream 802.11 radio hardware and drivers found in Pocket PCs today. It supports WEP, PSK and WPA. The Wi-Fi Companion SDK is designed for use by programmers familiar with 802.11 networking concepts and with the Wi-Fi alliance WPA standard. To learn more click here (original source of this story).
