Kaspersky Anti-Virus Mobile 2.0 for Windows Mobile released
April 15, 2006 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Unlike Symbian phones, Windows Mobile phones don't really need anti-virus software because there were no cases of virus infection yet... but several companies are trying to capitalize on fears of people and corporations...

Now also Kaspersky joins the party but unfortunately is not providing any trial version for download:

New generation of antivirus for mobile phones reaches the final phase of development Kaspersky Lab begins open beta testing of Kaspersky Anti-Virus Mobile

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions that protect against viruses, Trojans, spyware, worms, hacker attacks and spam, is beginning open beta testing of a new generation protection system for Symbian smartphones, and is inviting all interested parties to participate.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Mobile is a fully functional, integrated security solution that uses advanced technology to protect smartphones against malicious programs and unwanted SMS/MMS messages or spam. It provides antivirus protection from Symbian smartphones both on access (viruses are intercepted in real-time) and on demand (the program scans files on the smartphone, including memory extension cards). The solution also protects the mobile device against spam in the form of SMS/MMS messages using a blacklist. The user can control the program’s settings, view current antivirus protection status and the event log where the program’s actions are recorded.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Mobile includes antivirus database updating that ensures that the device is protected against the latest malicious programs. Updating can be performed automatically using a scheduling tool or manually, on the user’s demand. Database updates are downloaded via WAP or HTTP from Kaspersky Lab servers. Kaspersky Anti-Virus Mobile takes advantage of advanced features found in today’s smartphones and uses the device’s web browser to receive antivirus database updates and information about the viruses detected.

It offers users significantly extended functionality from previous systems, including: scanning of individual objects (files or folders); and isolation of infected objects in a dedicated quarantine storage area to prevent deletion of important information. The antivirus protection has become even more reliable due to the feature of unpacking and scanning the contents of .sis files, which are often used by cybercriminals for distributing malicious code.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Mobile also provides a pioneering antispam component that protects phone owners from mass-mailed advertising distributed via SMS/MMS. The antispam component has three predefined operating modes with different filtering levels: ‘Enable’, ‘B/W Lists Only’ and ‘Disable’.

In the ‘Enable’ mode the antispam module filters incoming messages based on the blacklist and the whitelist, which are compiled by the user. When a message is received from a telephone number that is on neither list, the antispam module prompts the user to block or allow the message, and then to add the sender number to one of the lists. In this mode the antispam module operates as a personal SMS/MMS filter that ensures that the user receives only the messages that are needed. In the ‘B/W Lists Only’ mode the system filters incoming messages based only on the data from the blacklist and the whitelist. Messages from numbers that are on neither list are received without prompting the user. Finally, in the ‘Disable’ mode incoming messages are not filtered.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus Mobile can be installed on smartphones running versions 6.1, 7.0s and 8.X, Series 60 UI of the Symbian operating system. The product is available in two variants: one for Symbian OS 6.1 and 7.0, Series 60 UI, the other for Symbian OS 8.0 and 8.1, Series 60 UI. Beta 2 version of the product, which is currently being developed, will include support for the following platforms: Symbian Series UIQ and Windows Mobile 2003/5.0 Smartphone edition.

The conditions and procedures of participation in the beta testing program are available from the beta testing section on the Kaspersky Lab website. The most active participants of the program will receive a free copy of the program upon commercial release
