Why i-Mate is based in DUBAI in United Arab Emirates?

While we were interviewing Jim Morisson - CEO and founder of i-mate - at 3GSM 2006 we didn't ask this question because answer seemed too obvious for us (low taxes!), but here comes an interview or rather an article about Jim Morisson (CEO and founder of i-mate):



... and about i-mate company, that explains this and other things:

“That’s how I ended up here,” he gestures across the the views of Dubai from where we are sitting in Emirates Towers.

The Scot has come full circle from working in the UK and penetrating diverse markets in the telecoms sector to heading up a Dubai-based company that is penetrating traditional markets in the US, Australia and Europe.

He says the company has not yet any plans to go into Asia, though i-mate does manufacture devices in Taiwan.

“We save money by outsourcing there. Dubai is a great location to base a company not only is there tax incentives but also it is ideally located between Asia and Europe making it easier to transport and sell the final product, ” Morrison says.

Conclusion: this article about i-mate, while very interesting, is a bit exaggerated: after all i-mate is just a distributor of phones designed and manufactured by HTC in Taiwan, but Jim Morrison makes an impression as if HTC was just a lesser manufacturer that manufactures phones for i-mate according to i-mates designs and requests...
