The power of Windows Mobile enchanted Palm: low cost Treo to be powered also by Windows Mobile ! April 19, 2006 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. "Hollywood" is expected to be Palm's "low-cost" smartphone -- under $300 -- but was until this point assumed to be Palm OS. Surprise, surprise, it's Windows Mobile! Although this particular device has no carrier logo the person who posted these pictures has apparently been testing the device on Cingular’s GSM voice network and new UMTS 1900 data network with which he claims to have achieved over 500Kbps broadband 3G speeds – about 10 times current Treo 650 speed over 2G networks. Let us remember that we still are in rumor phase as far as "Treo Hollywood" is concerned, but it is extremely interesting to see that Palm decides to use Windows Mobile first in its UMTS phone. It looks like Linux based Palm OS (ALP = Access Linux Platform) is not ready yet and there are even rumors that Palm Inc itself is working on its own version of Palm OS based on Linux. In any case Palm making Windows Mobile Treo smartphones means that Symbian loses the chance to dominate U.S. American smartphone market - as it did with European and Asian markets. However outside of USA the Treo smartphones are not well known, have only tiny market share and generally no big chances (yet) to compete with Nokia's Symbian smartphones. Palm still is a very small company that is at mercy of hardware manufacters (hardware of Treo 700w was not only manufactured but also designed by HTC) but it is good to see that Palm goes the Windows Mobile path - in this way Palm has big ally in Microsoft and can easier combat Symbian/Nokia cartel.
