By term "smartphone" both devices with touch screen (like Pocket PC) and without touch screen (like MS Smartphone) are meant. Generally smartphone is a mobile phone that can execute 3rd party native applications (not just Java based). Nokia realized that it can't compete with Microsoft in area of software, so it is launching new smartphones with boosted characteristics like Nokia N93... so it will be very difficult for Windows Mobile camp to catch up... outside of USA. "Symbian’s global share in smart mobile devices hits new high of 69%, Microsoft is second on 12%" "In addition to the shipment increases made by Nokia and RIM, Japanese vendors such as Mitsubishi and Sharp have achieved very high volumes of their new Symbian-based FOMA smart phones in Q1, catapulting them into the global top five. With increased shipments from Fujitsu, and a new device from Sony Ericsson, Symbian is enjoying not only significant Japanese market success, but also seeing record global market share." It's worth noting that there's now not a single Microsoft vendor in the top 5 of the converged smart mobile device market (i.e. "smartphone"). Symbian accounts for four and RIM is the other.
